Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists February Report

Added February 13, 1999

as reported by Pete Joyce

Let me introduce myself. I am the one that never seemed to learn the rule that "you Never Volunteer." My name is Pete Joyce. I am a member of GABAABCLAB and Adventure Cycling. I have agreed to take on the mantel of being the GABA representative at the Coalition meetings and being the one who passes out the happenings from said meetings. Yes, I VOLUNTEERED to take over from Keith Miles. Keith did a wonderful job and I hope to be able to continue the good reporting.

February 8 Meeting News

The February meeting was held a week early because the normal meeting date was Presidents' Day. All Government agencies and some commercial companies were on holiday.

The planning process for the Statewide Bicycling Advocacy Meeting, to be held April 15, 1999, continues. The basic agenda is in place and is in the review and comment cycle now. Tom Fisher, Tucson Bike Coordinator and Matthew Zoll, Tucson-Pima County Bike Advisory Committee Chairman have been added as Speakers at this event. It is expected that LAB will also provide a speaker for this meeting.

It is expected that the attendance will be good and it is important that you the cyclist plan to be present to show support for the bicycling public. This meeting is being held during the annual Bicycle Week Activities.

The Annual Coalition Bike Swap Meet is scheduled for April 17th, 7AM to 2PM. it is to be held in the Phoenix Municipal Baseball Stadium parking lot.

The Coalition is in the final stages of Web Page development. The page should be up and operating by the end of February. The address is to be http://www.cazbike.org/.

As requested by Keith I am in need of an e-mail address for any Yuma bike clubs or bike persons. Also provide me with e-mail addresses for any person or organization that you feel should be on distribution for this letter.

STATE LEGISLATIVE ALERT

House Bill 2551 is currently in the transportation committee for consideration for movement to the full house. This bill is Bicyclist unfriendly. It is designed to make the Bicyclist an unintended user of Arizona roadways. It will relieve the State and ADOT of any responsibility for any bicycle related injuries, incurred by cyclist, while on State or ADOT facilities.

The Coalition is currently in the process of contacting the bills sponsors to advise them of the Coalition position on this bill. The Sponsors are Rep Linda Binder (dist 1), Rep Barbara Leff (dist 24), Rep Roberta Voss (dist 19). We encourage you as cyclists to contact your state legislative representatives and let them know that we feel that this is a cyclist unfriendly bill and we, as cyclists do not in favor of it.

The Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists is a nonprofit organization devoted to advancing bicycling as a sport and mode of transportation through cooperation with local and state government, by being active in government where it concerns bicycling.

Monthly meeting are held at the Los Olivos Senior Center on 28th street one block north of Indian School, the 3rd Monday of the month, 7PM. All are welcome and encouraged to attend whether you are a coalition member or not. If your club is not presently represented we invite you to send a representative.

Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists January Update

Added January 27, 1999

as reported by Keith Miles

Next volunteer please! Roy Kopel asked me to do this, and I agreed to - for one year. Well, my year is almost up. I need a replacement to continue this column. There are around 500 members in just the Phoenix Metro Club alone, and I believe that there certainly is another to share the load and continue this column, which has been well received, and is now also published in the Tuscon newsletter. It involves about 4 hours of time per month. Not a lot! Keith Miles, V.P., Phoenix Metro.

The Coalition is advancing on the statewide bicycling advocacy meeting to be held April 15th, 1999. Andy Clark will be the main speaker, a well known bicycling advocate and consultant for the Federal Highway Administration. About 300 people in positions of responsibility which can affect bicyclists will be invited, and you too! Statewide, we hope that all club leaders will make plans to attend this event. Location to be announced next month. The Coalition is now the recognized consultant to ADOT. How? Because for many years the Coalition has developed a working relationship with this organization, and its finally paid off. They're listening to us. The City of Phoenix's annual budget for bicycle facilites 8 years ago was $50,000. It is now $1.3 million, for a single project, and this nearly exponential expansion has evolved in no small part, thanks to the efforts of a few dedicated bicyclists of the Coalition.

The Annual Coalition Bike Swap Meet will be held at the Phoenix Municipal Baseball Stadium (the old Firebird's stadium, near the zoo) in the parking lot on April 17th from 7am to 2pm. Come out and buy or sell something! I need an e-mail address or phone no. for any bike club(s) in the Yuma area, so I can get this out to them too. If you've got one, please send it.

The Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists is a non-profit organization devoted to advancing bicycling as a sport and mode of transportation through cooperation with local and state government, by being active in government where it concerns bicycling.

Monthly meetings are held at the Los Olivos Senior Center just north of Indian School on 28th Street in Phoenix, the 3rd Monday of every month, 7 PM. NOTE: FEBRUARY'S MEETING WILL BE ON THE 8TH, in March, we return to the normal schedule, the 3rd Monday of each month. All are welcome, whether you are a Coalition member or not. If your club is not presently sending a representative, we invite you to do so! Road hazards? Report them to the Hazard Hotline.
