Spin Cycle Report

End of Year Wrap-Up

Added January 1, 2009

written by Glen Fletcher

It's been a year already - wow how time fly's. Spin Cycle enjoyed another great year of riding, with many of our old time riders (yes, I mean old!) and new riders joined us during the year. We had the highs of South Mountain and lows of Sacaton. We had upwards of 51 riders and as low as 1 lonely rider during our weekly rides. We rode in the blazing sun and frost of winter, and never once complained, well, ok, most of you complained, but that is what makes it fun.

Thanks for making it another great year, look forward to pedaling with you during the new year.

Ride Schedule

1/4/2009 - 8:30 AM - NOTE START TIME FOR JANUARY - Germann-Hunt Loop - Mileage options of 33 or 42 flat miles. Breakfast at Wildflower at the Chandler Mall.

1/11/2009 - 8:30 AM - Casa Grande Century or 32 miler or 62 miler ride. See Major Events for details - Meet at Safeway Parking Lot - Alma School & Chandler Heights.

1/18/2009 - 8:30 AM - Tour de Queen Creek - Mileage options of 25, 35, 38, 40, 44, or 50 miles - all flat. Breakfast at Paradise Bakery - Ray & Price.

1/25/2009 - 8:30 AM - Tempe Mountains - Out to Rio Salado & then to McDowell road for some slight climbing. Mileage options of 38 or 45 miles, with the climbing on the longer route. Breakfast at Einstein Bagels on Ray & Rural.

52 Warm Hearted Riders Brave 31 Degrees at Start of AhwaFooty Route

Added December 26, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Even 31 degrees at start time didn't deter 52 warm hearted riders from appearing for our romp this morning. Hugs were popular at sign-in, with everybody trying to suck the body heat out of their friends. Once we got rolling, it wasn't too bad, or at least we were numb enough that it seemed OK. A quick circut of the foothills was done, then a mad dash for indoor seating and hot drinks at breakfast.

Coming up...

Friday 1/1/10 8:30am Kiwanis Park. NOTE THE TIME CHANGE! Start your year off right, on the seat of a bike. We head out on the McKellip's Loop, with route options of 28 miles or 37 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Saturday 1/2/10 8:30am Kiwanis Park. We loop around town to the north on a figure eight on the St. Francis Loop. Route options of 26 miles or 36 miles, moderate climbing on both. Brunch after the romp at SomeBurro's, southwest corner Baseline & Mill. You knew we would get that lucky bean burro in there somewhere, right?

Saturday 1/9/10 8:30am Kiwanis Park. If you're joining us on Sunday January 10th for the Casa Grande Century, then this Saturday morning is a rest day for you. We'll accomodate that by taking a cruise to the quiet streets of the Tour de Lehi, original route. Options of 27 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Saturday 1/16/10 8:30am Kiwanis Park. We're off to South Mountain Park, with route options of 24 miles with a bit of gentle climbing, 36 miles with moderate climbing or 39 miles with lots of climbing (and a bone-chilling downhill!). Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Kyrene & Elliot.

Tid bits

Making a New Year's resolution to pedal more? A great way to motivate yourself is to log your miles. Many of our club members use the www.bikejournal.com site to do that. The basic service is free, which allows you to track how you are doing, and lets you see how you compare to not only the rest of our club but also to other riders around the country. (Not that we're competitive or anything.) If you register there, link yourself to our club (Phoenix Metro Bicycle Club) and join us in the annual quest to top the other clubs on the site. Everybody's mileage log will reset to zero at the end of the year, so let the games begin!

Ride safe.

St. Nick Among 79 Riders in Search for Free Food

Added December 20, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The offer of free breakfast brought us 79 enthusiastic riders to the park this morning, including one who looked remarkably like ol' St. Nick himself. Who knew the bearded one would be a road cyclist? He seems more like a 'bent rider kinda guy. The closer we got to the restaurant, the larger the herd got, as cyclists came in from all directions to joins us for eats. We had a lot of info to jam pack into the meeting, but did manage to work some actual club business in, also. Much to our benefit, club prez Ron Waller and also the Keeper Of The Checkbook Mike Kirk have agreed to continue their leadership in the club for another year. Adding to the mix, Cindy DiMassa will now be recording our shenanigans as secretary and Ken St.John steps up to be keeper of the herd as vice prez. The board also gladly welcomed Charlie Davis to their ranks as a general board member, so the Thugs now have official representation. Oodles of thanks to our out going officers Jane Larson and Tom Adams.

Coming up...

Saturday 12/26/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. Come ride off those holiday treats you've been noshing, join us on the AhwaFooty route. Options of 24 miles with one gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner of Elliot & Kyrene.

If you're joining us on Sunday January 10th for the Casa Grande Century, an event not to be missed, then this Saturday morning is a rest day for you. We'll accomodate that by taking a cruise to the quiet streets of the Tour de Lehi, original route. Options of 27 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

Hard to believe, the "big day" is just 22 days away. No, not that big holiday, the big riding day! PMBC's awesome event ride to Casa Grande is held in January each year and people come from all over the southwest to join in. If you haven't signed up, go do it now, the reduced cost for early sign-up ends in just a few days. You can print off a registration form from the club's website at www.pmbcaz.org or head to www.active.com for online registration. Route options of 103 miles, 62 miles or 34 miles, with great food and ride support.

And speaking of our website, if you have the old site ( www.sportsfun.com ) still in your favorites, dump it. We've completed the transition to the new site name and you'll need to head there direct, www.pmbcaz.org, if you want to get there. Rather like some of the sneaky versions our ride routes.

Ride safe.

72 Riders Head Out into the Cold on Tour de Sue

Added December 12, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The later start time this morning tempted 72 riders out of their warm beds and into the cold for our romp down south today. We had new riders out with us from both Pennsylvania and Ohio, and they all thought it was a lovely morn for a pedal. Just depends on your perspective! At the breakfast stop, hot cocoa and coffee were the beverages of choice, and we discussed indepth how Geno has managed to turn 60 and yet still look so maaaarvelous.

Coming up...

Saturday 12/19/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. FREE FOOD! It's time for our last quarterly membership breakfast and meeting for 2009. We're hreaded to the Home Town Buffet in Scottsdale, northwest corner of Scottsdale Rd and Bellevue (between McKellips & McDowell). Ride with us from Kiwanis Park on the Mummy Mountain route or aim to meet us there at 10:00am. Route options 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with extra climbing. Breakfast is free to all PMBC members, $8 for non-members. This will be our last Saturday morning romp before Christmas, so don your antlers and jingle bells. White beards optional.

Saturday 12/26/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. Come ride off those holiday treats you've been noshing on, join us on the AhwaFooty route. Options of 24 miles with one gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner of Elliot & Kyrene.

And yes, believe it not we have people asking for this annual tradition, brunch after the romp at SomeBurro's, southwest corner Baseline & Mill. You knew we would get that lucky bean burro in there somewhere, right?

Tid bits

With shades of Cinderella this morning (or is that OJ?) we had a wayward glove floating around the breakfast stop, looking for a hand that it would fit. If you lost a very small blue fingerless glove, your ride leader has it. And speaking of blue fingers, if you were riding this morning with bare finger tips, you need to read up on a recent Tid Bits section in regards to covering your bits and pieces during the winter!

Ride on.

5th annual Free Ride Draws 114 Riders

Added December 5, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Even near freezing temp at sunrise didn't discourage 114 riders from descending a couple of hours later on Pioneer Park for our 5th annual Free Ride adventure. An interesting assortment of clothing was flaunted amid the pack, what ever worked to keep the chill at bay. Everybody seemed to have a grand time, though it was sometimes hard to tell the grins from teeth clenched due to the cold. Huge thanks to ride leader Glen Fletcher for putting the event together for us again this year and to all of our worker bees that made everything work so smoothly.

Coming up...

Saturday 12/12/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. We head southbound on the Tour de Sue, route options of 28 miles or 36 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Breakfast is free to all PMBC members, $8 for non-members. We will have on sale the remaining stock of club clothing, so bring cash or a check if you want to treat yourself to some holiday shopping!

Saturday 12/26/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. Hard to believe it's already our last Saturday morning romp of 2009! Come ride off those holiday treats you've been noshing on, join us on the AhwaFooty route. Options of 24 miles with one gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner of Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

A guest out with us this morning, who was experiencing a PMBC-style pedaling adventure for the first time, asked if we always had that much fun at our rides. The answer was heck no, we often times have even more fun! Our holiday bash for the club is approaching next Saturday, December 12th, from 4pm to 6pm. We've had so many members want to be in on this social event of the season that we have gone back and expanded the space reserved. See Notices for complete details, location is D'Vine Bistro at Alma School & Ocotillo Rd in Chandler. If you haven't RSVP'd yet, we now have more space available, just zing a note to Tina Miller. Cost is $15 a head (or actually, a mouth) and includes a buffet of whoop-dee-doo finger foods and soda/ice tea (cash bar). As with all of our social events, if you don't show, we'll be making up stories about why you aren't there, and we're pretty creative.

Ride safe.

Cloudy Sunrise Greets 52 Cyclists on Paseo de Cesar Chavez Route

Added November 28, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

This morning's cloud covered sunrise reduced our Saturday herd to 52 cyclists. We scooted over across south Phoenix before most of the locals were up and about, leaving us to negotiate the debris strewn streets with few cars and only the occasional neighborhood dog to motivate us. The pace picked up when we reached Baseline on the return roll, a combination of not wanting to spend any longer than needed with the by then much heavier traffic and being fairly certain we could smell the coffee already from the breakfast stop.

Coming up...

Saturday 12/5/09 9:00am Pioneer Park (Mesa). The one day a year when Saturday Cycling relocates to a different start point, it's time for FREE RIDE! See Major Events for complete details on this free event, which includes a free lunch after the ride. Did we mention this is free? If you are attending this romp, we need you to RSVP to ride leader Glen Fletcher. Note that sign-in opens at 9:00am, ride starts at 9:30am. There will be no ride on this date at Kiwanis Park.

Saturday 12/12/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. We head southbound on the Tour de Sue, route options of 28 miles or 36 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

The chill at the start of our rides at this time of year, combined with the mild temp by the time we are done, makes pre-ride clothing selection a challenge. Before opting for a heavy layer on your torso, cover all your bits and pieces. You can pop for full finger cycling gloves or inexpensive light weight knit gloves can be worn as liners under your regular gloves. Those multitudes of vents in your helmet which keep your brain from cooking in the summer will steal a lot of body heat in the winter. Don a skull cap that can be pulled down over your ears or a ski band that covers your forehead and ears. We don't have too many days here that call for full shoe covers, but popping for toe booties that cover just the front half of your shoe works well to stop the wind from chilling your soles. Or, if you're Roger, you can duct tape plastic bags over your feet. Nobody ever said having a sense of fashion was a requirement to be a road cyclist.

Rolling Amok on Buddy's Route

Added November 21, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The siren call of Tucson reduced the home field to 53 shivery riders this morning. We managed to stay together as a herd for a few miles, making the first couple of turns like a beautifully synchronized team, before degrading into the chaos of Buddy's route gone amuck. Some how the front of the pack managed to pass the middle of the pack at least three times during the journey, bringing up the theory of the area possibly being one of those special vortex places. During our attempt to exit Buddy's Triangle, Cannondale John demonstrated why, if you must boot a hole in your tire with a dollar bill, that you should use a $1 bill, and not a $20. His freshly installed boot failed, and the tube rupturing out the hole again shredded his $20 boot. The stunned look on his face, watching the little green bits of paper drifting down onto his shoes, was worth the price of the ride (which was free for us, but $20 for John!).

Coming up...

Thursday 11/26/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. Join us for a Thanksgiving morning tradition, the Captain's Tour de Lehi, a loop around the peaceful streets of Lehi. Route options 27 miles or 32 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe and McClintock.

Friday 11/27/09 7:30am Desert Breeze Park. Our Sunday pack SpinCycle invites SatCycling and the Koko riders to join them in a just say no to shopping romp. This will be an all skill levels adventure, offering up six route options, ranging from 25 to 50 miles in distance, with no climbing, on the Tour de Queen Creek. Breakfast is Paradise Bakery, southeast of Ray & the 101 freeway. Desert Breeze Park is located in Chandler, southeast of Rural & Ray, meet by the train station.

Saturday 11/28/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. We'll try revisiting the Paseo de Cesar Chavez route, to see how the construction has progressed. This route takes us west through south Phoenix, with options of 25 miles or 35 miles, no climbing, unless you count the gradual elevation gain on Dobbins Rd. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast of Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 12/5/09 9:00am Pioneer Park (Mesa) The one day a year when Saturday Cycling relocates to a different start point, it's time for FREE RIDE! Head to the club's website for complete details on this free event. Note that sign-in opens at 9:00am, ride starts at 9:30am. No ride fee and free food, come help us celebrate cycling. There will be no ride on this date at Kiwanis Park.

Tid bits

We seemingly ride seamlessly, except when we don't. On a regular basis we get seamed, gapped, railed, grated, rippled and lipped. As much as we try to fight the concept, the roads we roll along are often not a good surface to be on when driving a vehicle with a tire contact point of about an inch wide. (That sound you just heard was the fat tire crowd snickering at us roadies!) On the long list of things you must stay aware of while in motion on your road bike is the surface under your tires. Gaps and seams appear in the road with no warning, and if you allow your front wheel to track into them, you and your steed are going to rapidly come to a parting of the ways. When in a group, your forward vision can be limited, adding even more to the challenge. Any place where asphalt butts up against concrete, watch for seams that gap enough to grab your wheel. Rolling over concrete that has expansion joints, intersections with sections of cobblestones, riding near sewer grates, crossing train tracks... the road can be a hazardous place. And you though the hard part was making the pedals go 'round!

Ride safe.

Rain Didn't Deter 73 Riders on Tour de Mesa

Added November 15, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

You would think a pretty solid rain in Tempe a half hour before the start time would discourage the herd, but we still had 73 riders appear for our damp adventure this morning. We stalled a few minutes, then headed out to the east, aiming for a clear spot on the horizon. That didn't work quite as planned, as the clouds swirled around to follow us, but we just kept moving, trying to ignore the ominous skies. Those that lingered over hot drinks at the breakfast stop were treated to a free bike wash as the rain caught up with the group there.

Coming up...

Saturday 11/21/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. Buddy's Route aka Pylant's Pedal takes us through the Ahwatukee Foothills area. One route, in the range of 30 miles, but you can alter that by adding or subtracting climbs. Breakfast at Paradise Bakery, southwest of 54th St & Ray.

Tid bits

To get you into the holiday mood, here is an annual tradition that some of our members look forward to. The following message is brought to you by Richard Moeur:

The annual Fiesta Bowl Parade will again roll through central Phoenix on Saturday, January 2nd, 2010. The Fiesta Bowl Parade is the one of the largest spectator events in Arizona, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators, and is also considered the top parades in the nation. Come join us and share in the unique experience of using our bicycles to help our community. Watch the smiles on the kids and see the complex logistics of presenting this extravaganza for spectators and television.

Your efforts will be needed from approximately 7AM until 2PM. You'll get a free breakfast, the items you need to perform your duties (bring your own bikes & helmets, of course), and the satisfaction of a job well done.

If you're interested, please e-mail Richard Moeur with your name and contact info (address, phone numbers {home/ofc/cell}, etc.), and I'll take care of the rest.

Apologies for the short notice, but I will need to hear from all volunteers by December 4th, 2009 so we can get the process rolling. Hope to get your reply very soon!

Mummy Mountain Route Entertains 88 Riders

Added November 7, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 88 riders welcome the later start time this morning. Joining us in the park were oodles of Boy Scouts gathering together for some kind of scouty thing. We managed to get under way without taking out anybody in a uniform, and then promptly rode into the chaos of a large walk-for-bucks underway in north Tempe. A few creative detours led us to a tour of a freeway access road and also brought forth a comment rarely heard on our Saturday romps of "What? I can't hear you over the gunfire!" as we rolled by the National Guard's shooting range. Saturday mornings are always, if nothing else, very entertaining.

Coming up...

Saturday 11/14/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. Tour de Mesa, with options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

This route takes us west through south Phoenix, with options of 25 miles or 35 miles, no climbing, unless you count the gradual elevation gain on Dobbins Rd. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast of Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

We had a few riders who normally take the longer route option join our beautiful home tour on the short route this morning. Comments were made along the lines of how enjoyable it was to just roll along at a moderate pace, talking to other riders, having time to take in the sights, etc. When you look at exercise charts, they often note that for the activity of cycling, the stats are based on pedaling at 15mph. That level of exertion is sufficient to burn a lot of calories in two hours of riding, give your immune system a boost, reduce your stress level, and allows you to take in the world and people around you. If you're training for a timed riding event in your future, yes, ride far and hard. We'll save you a seat (maybe) at breakfast.

Ride safe.

Halloween Group a Scary Sight on South Mountain Ride

Added October 31, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 69 riders brave the chilly just-after-sunrise start this morning. In honor of the holiday, most of the group came dressed up, in brighly colored skin tight lycra from head to toe. A scary sight if there ever was one. As we rolled out we managed to dodge a run that was getting assembled to take off and the city's worker bees who were putting together the festival area for the evening's community gathering in the park. The romp across Baseline warmed the group up, amazing how traffic going by your elbow at 50mph can get your heart beating. It was still nippy in S. Mt Park when we arrived, but it was a welcome change from climbing in the heat. The pedal back in to town seemed to go quick, maybe it was the anticipation of hot drinks and interesting breakfast chatter that enticed us to crank it up.

Coming up...

Saturday 11/7/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. NOTE THE TIME CHANGE! Mummy Mountain, with route options of 31 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with some additional climbs. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner McClintock & Guadalupe.

Saturday 11/14/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. Tour de Mesa, with options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

At the Tour de Tempe last Sunday morning, Mayor Hugh dissed riders that wear lycra, resulting in a gasp arising from those in the crowd bedecked in cycling gear. For "people on bikes" (as opposed to cyclists) the wearing of vibrantly colored, body hugging clothing made of high tech fabric seems silly. We cyclists wear our interesting outfits because they are safer and work better than street clothes. Loose clothing is at the very least irritating, flapping against your body in the wind when you ride, but at worse can be a hazard. If you've ever witnessed a dangling bit of clothing get caught up in a rearwheel, you'll immediately understand why bike clothes are form fitting. Those eye-catching colors are exactly that, high visibility to catch the attention of cars. And the wonder fabrics keep us from chafing, from getting getting chilled or over heated, and keep our muscles compressed for peak performance. Some of us need all the help we can get! Wear your goofy clothes with pride, grasshoppers.

Numerous Gaggles of Riders on AhwaFooty

Added October 24, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The draw of the Ride For Safety in the north part of the valley reduced our home team to 61 riders this morning. We triumphantly rolled out of the park, and the first flat occurred within about a block. After getting underway again, we made it about two blocks past that, to the Guadalupe/I-10 over-pass, before another bike decided it just didn't see the point to making that climb and rebelled by way of its rear derailer curling around into the rearwheel. The cyclist atop this steed did get high marks for a beautifully executed leap for his life, landing on his feet. These points of interest at the start of the romp split the field into numerous gaggles of riders, which never found each other again, but all seemed to enjoy their personal route selection in the foothills. The new Crackers location was great, with the minor exception of a really slick polished floor, leading to a few cleat dances. Hey, breakfast and a show, you can't beat that!

Coming up...

Saturday 10/31/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. We'll be heading out just after sunrise for a spokey (as opposed to spooky) roll over to boo-tiful South Mountain. Ride options 27 miles with a bit of gentle climbing, 38 miles with moderate climbing, or 39 miles with lots of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 11/14/09 7:30 Kiwanis Park. Tour de Mesa, with options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

Today was National Make A Difference Day. We had some club members volunteer their time to staff a rest stop at the Ride For Safety. They didn't ride, so that others could, and so that funds could be raised to make cycling in Arizona a safer thing to do. One of our riders this morning stopped at the cyclist memorial on Pecos Road, to spiff it up and remove trash. We have an entire squadron of club volunteers lined up to assist with Tempe's community bike ride tomorrow morning. They're giving up their usual Sunday morning romp so that we can help introduce local residents to the joy of cycling. Simply opting to ride your bike somewhere as transportation instead of driving a car, makes a difference. We, as cyclists, have the power to make a difference daily, not just one day a year.

The McKellips "It's Hot Again" Wind Loop

Added October 18, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 83 cyclists appear for our "it's hot again" ride this morning. The group managed to make its way up thru Tempe before the crowds assembled for the Kush run, then turned east into a headwind. The reward for slogging across the top of the loop into the wind, was the tailwind assisted rollicking romp back into town. We seemed to be the only ones at Einy's this morning, maybe everybody else was staying home in their air conditioning.

Coming up...

Saturday 10/24/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The AhwaFooty route gives us options of 24 miles with one gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at Crackers located southeast of Elliot & Priest (56th St), in the Costco parking lot, about a block east of Priest. Note, if you haven't checked out this Crackers location yet, it's much larger than the original, and we have a large private room reserved just for our loud sweaty herd.

Tid bits

It's event ride season, and the cycling calendar is full to over flowing. We post most of the major ones on our website, to help you try and keep up with the flow. The Memorial Ride For Safety is upon us next Saturday. Following that we still have the Heart of Arizona Century, the McDowell Mountain Century, Tour de Tucson, and numerous other assorted romps. Yes, they all cost money (with the exception of our Free Ride in December!). Some channel a percentage of your fee to charity, some are fund raisers for cycling organizations. But what they all have in common is that they are grand adventures to try. Gathering together with a large number of cyclists, pedaling roads you might not normally travel, enjoying the paradise known as Arizona in the fall... what could be better than that? It might seem odd to pay to pedal, when we do so every day for free, but toss in some mid-ride cookies at a rest stop and post ride hoopla laughing it up with hundreds of other people that just accomplished what you did, and you'll begin to understand the draw.

Ride safe.

Shivers Running Through the Pack

Added October 11, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Our first cool start of the fall had shivers running through the pack this morning. You would think 87 riders jammed into a small parking lot would generate their own heat, but after we got under way most of the group warmed up. (Or maybe that was hanging in the cloud of hot air created by the riders in the lead talking so much that got things cooking?) In any case, the romp over and down Lindsay was lovely under overcast skies. On arrival at our pit stop Great Harvest, we were awed to discover oodles of seating and a tempting display of carbs enticing us. Many in the group who lived within a few miles of this tucked away gem expressed surprise that it was even there. A place with caffiene and scrumptious baked goods that the local cyclists don't know about? Hard to fathom.

Coming up...

Saturday 10/17/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The McKellips Loop offers route options of 28 miles or 37 miles, one gentle climb. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner of Guadalupe & McClintock.

Saturday 10/24/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The Ahwafooty route takes us into the Ahwatukee and Foothills area, options of 24 miles with one gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Another new-to-us breakfast stop, at Crackers located southeast of Elliot & Priest (56th St), in the Costco parking lot, about a block east of Priest.

Saturday 10/31/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. We'll be heading out just after sunrise for a spokey (as opposed to spooky) roll over to boo-tiful South Mountain. On the way in and out of the park, we'll scoot by Scorpion Gulch, a local ghost town... so keep an eye out for scary things (other than the typical scary sight of people dressed in lycra!). Ride options 27 miles with a bit of gentle climbing, 38 miles with moderate climbing, or 39 miles with lots of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

Terrific Tina (our social director Tina Miller) has been fielding some questions about how people are to pay for the holiday bash that is posted on the club's website for December. She says "Show me the money!" or something along those lines. If you are attending, zing an email to Tina Miller to RSVP with the number in your party and then sometime before the date, hand her your moola live and in person. If you don't know who Tina is, ask. She promises not to go holiday shopping with the money she collects.

A quick reminder, traffic code requires that if you are cycling before legal sunrise time, you need lights. As we pedal into the end of the year, keep an eye on sunrise versus the time you roll out your door to come join us on Saturday morning. Low cost combo packages of white head-light and red blinky tail-lights are sold at most of the local bike shops. Get legal, get lit, get to the park alive. See how nicely that works?

93 Riders Head South on Tour de Sue

Added October 4, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 93 riders ignore the over night rain and appear at the park ready to head south this morning. Those tapering their efforts in preparation for Tour de Scottsdale tomorrow managed to hold themselves to some kind of moderate pace (for the most part). We did our bit to clean up the streets by way of several riders picking up debris in their tires. We filled every seat at the breakfast stop and then some, with an overflow crowd rolling on to Einy's. Have you noticed that cyclists like to eat?

Coming up...

Saturday 10/10/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The Length of Lindsay heads east, with options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at the Great Harvest Bread Company aka GHBC, northwest corner of Warner & McClintock.

Saturday 10/17/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The McKellips Loop offers route options of 28 miles or 37 miles, one gentle climb. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner of Guadalupe & McClintock. Note, this is the date of the Kush Run in downtown Tempe, but that event doesn't launch until 8:30, so we're going to try and sneak thru town before they notice us.

Saturday 10/24/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The Ahwafooty route takes us into the Ahwatukee and Foothills area, options of 24 miles with one gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. We have another new-to-us breakfast stop that a number of riders have been asking us to try, Crackers located southeast of Elliot & Priest (56th St), in the Costco parking lot, about a block east of Priest. The restaurant is so happy to host us, they are giving us a reserved private room.

Tid bits

Media productions about our beloved sport are rare, and the chance to see a new movie or documentary that has a cycling theme is cause for great excitement in the herd. "Race Across The Sky" will be showing here in the valley at seven theaters on Thursday October 22nd at 8:00pm. Details about the documentary and locations to see it, can be found at www.raceacrossthesky.com. Considering the cranked up population of cyclists here, pick a location and pre-purchase tickets now if you want to catch this. And yes, popcorn is a carb, just go easy on the butter stuff.

83 Riders Roll Out for Mummy Mountain and Offer of Free Food

Added September 27, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Considering the awesome weather at sunrise and the offer of free food, we had a reasonably small herd of 83 riders roll out this morning. Various versions of the suggested routes were taken, depending on how soon people wanted to appear at the buffet to start eating. We were joined at the restaurant by a few non-cycling family members and a small energetic contingent of cyclists that came all the way up from our Sun Lakes start point. The floor show known as our quarterly meeting was entertaining as always. One actual bit of club business was the announcement that our 2010 PMBC Officer Nomination Committee has been set up. We'll have openings for both secretary and vice president in the coming year and the names of any nominees should be submitted to the club chair Glen Fletcher.

Coming up...

Saturday 10/3/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The Tour de Sue takes us south, with route options of 28 miles or 36 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

The list of breakfast places that we've eaten out of business over the years is astounding. Shoney's, JB's, Brueggers, the hog trough at 56th & Elliot, and now the southern realm's buffet. If there's one thing cyclists enjoy almost as much as pedaling, it's eating! Go, grasshoppers, out into your communities, and find us someplace to hold our quarterly club breakfast meetings. We need someplace in the southeast valley that can seat 100 hungry cyclists together in one room and serve us some kind of food at a reasonable price. Maybe your church would like to take it on as a fund raiser? Heck, we'll come to your house if you have 100 chairs and your spouse doesn't mind cooking for a crowd. Any brilliant suggestions can be zipped to Tina Miller (our social maven).

Free M&Ms Lure 113 Riders on St. Francis Loop

Added September 21, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Amazing what a bowl of free M&M's by the sign-in sheet does for the official attendance count. We had 113 riders roll out into a gorgeous September morning today. The immediate split in the course options sent the long routers riding pell mell to the east, while the standard riders spun off to the west, enjoying their conversational pace, knowing they had a number of peaceful miles ahead before being over taken by the slathering dogs coming up from behind. By the end of the romp, the rising temp and humidity had everybody glowing (also known as sweating like run out horses) and we did a good job of draining the drink fountain at Einy's.

Coming up...

Saturday 9/26/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. It's time for free food! NOTE THE FOLLOWING CHANGE OF ROUTE AND BREAKFAST LOCATION! Due to the closure of the Home Town Buffet in Chandler, we are instead headed to the Home Town Buffet in Scottsdale, northwest corner of Scottsdale Rd and Bellevue (between McKellips & McDowell). Ride with us from Kiwanis Park on the Mummy Mountain route or aim to meet us there at 9:00am. Route options 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with extra climbing. Breakfast is free to all PMBC members, $8 for non-members. Our delivery of club jerseys has arrived, so if you have one on order, you can pick it up at this meeting. If you didn't order one (shame on you!), we'll have some overstock on sale, so bring some moola or your checkbook.

Saturday 10/3/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. We head southbound on the Tour de Sue, route options of 28 miles or 36 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 10/10/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The Length of Lindsay takes us on a loop to the east, with options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. And just because variety is the spice of life, we'll be headed to a new-to-us food stop afterwards. This place has been there for years, and we've had several members asking for a stop there, and they have an acronym similar to ours, so it must be fate. Breakfast will be at the Great Harvest Bread Company aka GHBC, northwest corner of Warner & McClintock.

Tid bits

Now that our weekly route maps are available off the website, we have a number of riders who by-pass the concept of signing in for our romps. Just a reminder, the club carries accident insurance that applies to our members, if you have signed in for that day's ride. In today's world of limited health coverage, your bank account and your family might be appreciative of you having access to a few extra medical dollars if you get injured during one of our romps. (And no, we will not let you sign-in after you have fallen down!)

And to thank you for reading this far into the ride report, a special offer from your club. Print this ride report off, jot your name on the back of it, and bring it with you to next Saturday's breakfast meeting. Hand it to our handsome and hard working president Ron Waller, and you'll be entered into a drawing for one year free membership in PMBC. A free breakfast and the chance to win another year's worth of free breakfasts for free?? Are we an awesome club or what?

75 Riders Roll Out to South Mountain

Added September 17, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Thanks to stand in ride leader Chris Jungk for leading the herd last Saturday morning. He's offered up the following post-ride report:

The Remember 9/11 Run did indeed take over our regular parking lot. This led to a bit of confusion because we had to occupy the farthest south lot in the park to avoid the race course. Eventually everyone found the sign-in and we had 75 riders roll out (relatively) on time. The ride out to the South Mountain was uneventful and the pack separated into various groups based on their desired ride goals, some of which were to stay at the stone house and chat. The South Mountain gremlins took their toll on tires with two flats (including one for the ride leader) and then everyone fought the head winds and rapidly increasing temperature on the way back down Baseline to the breakfast spot. The regulars took over the patio, which was rather nice with the misters and shade, where discussions ranged from Racing categories to resting heart rates.

Coming up...

Saturday 9/19/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The St. Francis Loop takes us on a figure eight to the north, with options of 26 miles or 39 miles, both with moderate climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner McClintock & Guadalupe.

Saturday 9/26/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. It's time for free food! NOTE THE FOLLOWING CHANGE OF ROUTE AND BREAKFAST LOCATION! Due to the closure of the Home Town Buffet in Chandler, we are instead headed north on this date. The club's quarterly breakfast meeting has been shifted to the Home Town Buffet in Scottsdale, northwest corner of Scottsdale Rd and Bellevue (between McKellips & McDowell). Ride with us from Kiwanis Park on the Mummy Mountain route or aim to meet us there at 9:00am. Route options 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with extra climbing. Note, if you are taking the long route on this date, you'll need to ride quick like a bunny to get to the restaurant by 9:00am. Breakfast is free to all PMBC members, $8 for non-members.

Saturday 10/3/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. We head southbound on the Tour de Sue, route options of 28 miles or 36 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

For all of you that marked your membership form to the club that you are willing to volunteer, your moment has come! On Sunday October 25th, PMBC will be hosting our traditional spot at the Tour de Tempe bike festival. In case you aren't familiar with that event, you can check out the details (and some stunning photos from last year) at http://www.tempe.gov/tim/. Every year our club gives away "free air" at the festival, running a station with a line up of club members armed with floor pumps and enthusiasm. We need about 8 pumpers adorned in PMBC jerseys to work that area from 7:00am to 8:30am. If you have a dual pump (that can do both Presta and Schreder valves) that you can bring along, that would be grand. If that sounds too early, we also need a herd of PMBC jersey clad ambassadors to participate in the ride itself, which departs at 8:30am. It's a free ride, with lots of freebies at the festival, and a great use of your free time!

Ride safe.

Gusting Winds, Torrential Rain, Lightening and Thunder on Tour de Mesa

Added September 6, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Well, our fall riding season started off with a bang this morning. 95 riders appeared in the park, all enjoying the cooler temp at start time. We scanned the skies, turned our backs on the one blue spot in the heavens, and rode straight into the heart of the storm cells moving across the valley. The lead of the pack simply plowed on, ignoring the conditions. The back of the group thought they had escaped the chaos, skirting around the edge of the front for the first half or so of the route, but then even they got caught. Gusting winds, lightening and thunder popping right overhead, then torrential rain. At various points we dodged in to bus stops, under building overhangs, and in to convenience stores, anything to take shelter from the conditions. And it was awesome. There is something just so silly about that kind of riding that it makes you laugh out loud. More than one rider afterwards said it was the most fun they had ever had on a road bike. A few risked hypothermia by dining inside the very a/c'd bagel stop afterwards, while some decided you can't any wetter than wet and enjoyed the very un-Arizony-ish weather on the patio.

Coming up...

Monday 9/7/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. A holiday romp to Mummy Mountain. Route options 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with a few additional climbs. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Saturday 9/12/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The somewhat lower heat index brings the South Mountain route back in to rotation for us. We head to the mountain, with options of 24 miles with a little gentle climbing, 38 miles with moderate climbing, or 39 miles with lots of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 9/19/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The St. Francis Loop takes us on a figure eight to the north, with options of 26 miles or 39 miles, both with moderate climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner McClintock & Guadalupe.

Tid bits

To those that hung in this morning, well done! Modern life has seperated us from the elements, and every now and then it does a soul good to get up close and personal with nature. Now, here is the test question. If you slogged through that adventure this morning, when you made it back home, which did you wash first? Your body or your bike? (And yes, if you have a large enough shower stall, there is potential to do both at once.) Today's high tech road bikes are delicate steeds, and the yuck that comes up off the road during wet street riding plays havoc with them. At the very least, rinse your bike off with clean water and clean/lube your drive system (chain and gears). Letting that grit dry on your chain and not removing it before your next pedal is an excellent way to support your local bike shop, by purchasing replacements parts in the near future.

Ride safe.

Heat Chases 94 Cyclists on AhwaFooty Route

Added August 29, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Our last early morn start of the summer season brought us 94 riders today, appearing at the park shortly after the sun boinked up over the eastern horizon. The large herd rolled out towards the Foothills, with only a brief pit stop at the first regroup, knowing the heat was chasing our back wheels. A few turned back along the short route, but most slogged their way around various versions of the climbs in the area before being tempted back in to breakfast by thoughts of the cool misty patio and the unlimited cold drinks fountain. We survived another summer of very Arizony-ish Saturdays!

Coming up...

Saturday 9/5/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. NOTE THE TIME CHANGE! We'll celebrate our first crisp, cool fall morning ride with the Tour de Mesa. Route options 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Monday 9/7/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. It's a holiday, take break from your labor and come with us to Mummy Mountain.

Tid bits

We saw one of the Team in Training groups this morning, building their miles towards what ever goal event their team has selected for the fall. Do you plan to do one of the large rides this coming season? If Tucson is on your schedule, you are now approximately 90 days out from that event. It's time to focus, grasshoppers. Now is the time to contemplate your equipment, and the human engine that drives it. If you carry more cargo on your frame (that would be your body frame, not your bike frame, though that applies also!), the next month or two is your window of time to part with it. Every pound of body weight you drop will shave minutes off your riding time, and add minutes to the length of your life. Pretty cool pay off, just for cutting back a bit at the feed trough, huh?

53 Cyclists Face Sunrise Rain on McKellips Loop

Added August 23, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Even rain at sunrise didn't deter 53 hard core cyclists from appearing at the start this morning. The sun peeked out for just a few minutes, but left us as we rolled out under almost complete overcast. The ride leader greatly reduced the odds of heavy rain by donning a rain jacket and fenders for the pedal (no sacrifice is too great!). The rain disturbed debris on the roads took a bite out of the pack, leaving a trail of riders stopped along the way changing flats. But the cool breezy temp made for an awesome morning to be out in the world for our eclectic crew. Our age range today was from 70 down to age 12, and the 12 year old was cranking up the pace at the back of the group!

Coming up...

Saturday 8/29/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. We head for the hills of AhwaFooty, route options 24 miles with one climb or 25 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 9/5/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. NOTE THE TIME CHANGE! We've already reached the end of our summer riding quarter.

It's a holiday and if you don't have to labor on this date, come with us to Mummy Mountain. Route options 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with a few additional climbs. (Yes, Galvin Parkway will probably still be under construction on this date, we'll just wing it!) Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

Ever since we appointed a social director for the club last year, we have gotten so... sociable! If you're staying in the nice warm valley for the Labor Day weekend, in addition to pedaling all three days, come join us for some excellent gelato that Sunday afternoon, along with a bit of bike gear swapping. On Sunday September 6th, 3:00pm, the pack gathers at Dolce Luna Gelato, which is at 4647 E. Chandler Blvd in Ahwatukee (Phx). That's at the southwest corner of 48th St and Chandler Blvd. Join PMBC for sweet treats as we escape the heat at our Ice Cream (Gelato!) Social & Swap Meet. (This is an Italian cafe and they also offer acohol, if you want to do some holiday celebrating in the afternoon!) Have a cycling geat item you no longer need? Bring it with you to sell or swap. Due to limited space, size of the item should be no larger than a bike wheel. Please RSVP for this event to Tina Miller or (480)385-9969.

Detour Version of Mummy Mountain Route

Added August 16, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Thanks oodles to ride leader Ken St. John for leading the herd the past two Saturdays. His flock of 88 riders last Saturday were very impressed that he was able to arrange for a cool August morn for them to romp in.

This morning we had 73 cyclists take on the detour version of the Mummy Mountain route. The group appeared to stay together pretty well for the first 2 miles of the course, following a pace rider, but then it got creative after that. Our maps are always just a suggestion, as long as you eventually make it back, its all good. Our wounded warrior division was well represented this morning, with McFadden pedaling with an arm cast and Neal with a bandaged ear. (Rumor has it that Neal had to have an ear transplant after listening to himself talk for so many years.)

Coming up...

Saturday 8/22/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. The McKellips Loop takes us over in Mesa, with route options of 28 miles or 37 miles, one gentle climb. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner of Guadalupe & McClintock.

We'll celebrate our first crisp, cool fall morning ride with the Tour de Mesa. Route options 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

Waaay back when, in the olden days, when our club was young and small, we could easily ride out of the clutter of town. Our Saturday morning romps often took us out beyond houses and convenience stores, by farms and crop fields. Now, we have to work at it to get out beyond all of that for open road riding. Many of our routes now are done entirely on in-city streets. Though that gives us the benefit of (for the most part) well maintained road surfaces and the availability of ice and restrooms at every corner, it brings with it the negative of traffic lights. When you ride with Saturday Cycling, please stop for red traffic lights. Wait for them to turn green before proceeding. If you are riding tail end in a group and get caught at a light, stop. Look at it as an opportunity to ride with somebody new that is coming up behind. The riders in front of you are just going to stop at the next light anyway, and lagging behind gives you the chance to gossip about all of them.

Ride safe.

A Few Sneaky Cyclists on Warm and Humid Tour de Sue

Added July 25, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The overcast sunrise tempted 76 riders out for our warm and humid romp to the south this morning. A few sneaky cyclists showed great creativity by cutting the short route short, landing them on the mist enshrouded patio of the breakfast stop early while the rest of the group slogged around the loop. There are many skills needed to be a recreational cyclist, and knowing when to make a beeline to shade and cool drinks is way up on the list.

Coming up...

Saturday 8/1/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. The AhwaFooty route takes us on a romp around in the Foothills with options of 24 miles with one gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast of Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 8/8/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. A loop we haven't done for awhile "A MidSummer Ride; A Quest For Shade" also known as the Summer Solstice Ride (OK, so we missed that by a bit). Route options 28 miles or 39 miles, with a couple of climbs on the long route. Breakfast is you pick it, at the northwest corner of Rural & Baseline, with a choice of Jamba Juice, Starbucks, McDonalds, or Whole Foods.

Saturday 8/15/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. We head north to Mummy Mountain, with route options of 30 miles with a couple of climbs or 40 miles with a bit more climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner McClintock and Guadalupe.

Tid bits

For those that get this ride report hot off the presses, a reminder that we have our last gathering for the 2009 Tour de France watching events tomorrow (Sunday 7/26). Location is back to Big Daddy's, at the west end of the Fry's center, SW corner of Chandler Blvd and 40th St in Ahwatukee. Broadcast is noon to 2:00pm. The BBQ is excellent and the company is grand, come on down to cheer on the podium boys (or the podium girls, depending on your preference).

Ride safe.

60 Sweaty Riders Brave High Heat Index on St. Francis Loop

Added July 19, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The air quality (or lack there of), the heat index, and the temptation to ride around the Foothills with Floyd Landis reduced the home team to 60 sweaty riders at the park this morning, We delayed our start for a few minutes, so as not to get run over by a giant herd of very serious looking runners, who appeared even sweatier than us, though they had been dashing along for only a block or so at that point. Within a few miles of rolling out, riders started plotting out how quickly they could bail out of the mapped route so as to get into the cool of the breakfast stop. It's the quality of the miles, not the distance.

Coming up...

Saturday 7/25/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. The Tour de Sue takes us to the south, down to either Queen Creek Road or Riggs Road. Mileage options 25 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast of Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

For those of us rooting for Levi in the TdF, watching him break a wrist in a seemingly gentle fall off his bike was heart wrenching. Some recent studies indicate high mileage cyclists are at risk for calcium loss, from two fronts. Though not seen as frequently in the recreational cycling world, paring your body weight down to the bare minium is hard on your bones. (See? Thugs rule!) But no matter what your body weight, when you sweat for hours while riding, you're losing the valuable minerals that your body needs. You can take supplements, but a better choice is just work calcium rich foods into your fuel choices. Low fat milk on your cereal before the ride. Post ride, a low fat milk or yogurt makes for great recovery. The next time your family catches you eating ice cream straight out of the carton with a spoon, tell them you're strengthing your bones.

Ride safe.

Saturday Cycling and White Mountain Tour

Added July 15, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

A two for the price of one ride report. This past Saturday our home team at Kiwanis had 42 cyclists roll out under the watchful eye of ride leader Matt Kas (thanks Matt!!). They managed to go see Lehi and get back to Einy's without anything too unusual happening.

At our alternate start point up in the pines, a large number of SatCycling riders appeared for the cool morning start in Pinetop for the club's annual White Mountain Tour. We had 120 cyclists head out on an adventurous journey across the high scrub country on the northern route to Springerville, returning Sunday morning on the southern route up past Greer and the Sunrise ski site. An absolutely grand event was put together for us by newbie ride leader Silverio Ontiveros.

Coming up...

Saturday 7/18/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. The St. Francis Loop takes us on a figure eight up through town, with routes options of 26 miles or 36 miles, moderate climbing on both. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

Bob Beane, our exuberant newsletter editor, advises we are confirmed for Payton's Place for our next two tour viewing dates on Saturday July 18th and Saturday July 25th from 11:30am – 1:30pm.. Location is 325 W Elliot Rd in Tempe, which is the southeast corner of Ellior & Kyrene (in the same complex as AZ Bread). Bob says "Stage #14 on 7/18 looks like one for a sprint finish, but could lead to a successful breakaway since it comes the day before a challenging mountain stage into Verbier and many teams may not wish to chase too hard. Stage #20 on 7/25 will end with the epic climb of Mt. Ventoux, which will decide the final podium for Paris." And you think Bob Roll gets excited about the TdF? He's got nothin' over our Bubski.

Red, White, and Blue on Mummy Mountain Route

Added July 5, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 82 riders appear this morning, many of them suitably adorned in various representations of red, white, and blue. We were getting sweaty just trying to get everybody signed in and ready to ride, bit of a hint of things to come. As we headed north, and the temp started to rise, the number of riders thinking about doing the shorter route rose along with it. We split at the first regroup, with the advanced riders off to pedal themselves into a slather, while those opting for the standard route enjoyed a mellow tour of some great houses, and even got to join in an impromptu 4th of July neighborhood bike parade. There was some discussion at breakfast about whether a rider could record the miles he and his bike logged during part of the morning's romp in a police car, but no decision was reached.

Coming up...

Saturday 7/11/09 6:30pm Kiwanis Park. A roll thru the quiet streets of the Tour de Lehi. Route options 27 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

A generous offer is on the table, if you are quick, in regards to next weekend's White Mountain Tour. Three registered riders have had to withdraw from the tour and rather than ask for reimbursement, they ask that their paid registrations go to three cyclists that would like to ride the tour but could not afford it. If you would like to have one of these registrations, please email WMT ride leader Silverio Ontiveros. It will be first come first serve, so quick like the bunnies we saw this morning, zing a note to Silverio.

Ride safe.

Warm Weather Doesn't Bother Pack of 84 on AhwaFooty Route

Added June 27, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had one small cloud giving us cover for about 2 minutes while our pack of 84 was assembling in the parking lot this morning. After the sun burned that off, it got a bit warm but that didn't seem to bother our group, or any of the oodles of other cyclists we encountered while romping in the foothills. The convenience store at 48th St & Chandler again banished us from using the restroom there, even though the owner of the store agreed he liked the dollars our pack spends at that location and said he would accomodate us. Do we have anybody in the club with connections at 7/11? :-)

Coming up...

Saturday 7/4/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. Don your red/white/blue and join us on a ride to Mummy Mountain. Route options 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with a couple of additional climbs. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe and McClintock.

Sunday 7/5/09 6:30am Pacana Park (Maricopa). Since not everybody has a day off for the 4th this weekend, we're moving our holiday romp to Sunday morning this year. And we're going to ask you to drive about 30 minutes to the southwest of Kiwanis Park to find your start point. Please join us for the first in a series of rides hosted by PMBC in the City of Maricopa, the "Maricopa and Hidden Valley Feedlot and Melon Field Tour". With a name like that, how could it be anything but fun? Address of the park is 19000 N. Porter Road in Maricopa. Route is 48 miles, no climbing, very low traffic. No ride fee. There are potential pit stops along the way, but also a chance they will be closed for the weekend, so come prepared to be self-supported with fluids and snackies for the length of the ride. For more details, contact our host and ride leader Jack McLain.

Saturday 7/11/09 6:30pm Kiwanis Park. A roll thru the quiet streets of the Tour de Lehi. Route options 27 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

The Tour is upon us. If you have to ask what tour, its back to the end of the pace line for you. Just to ramp up the celebration this year, the opening day of the Tour de France falls on the 4th of July. How cool is that?? Come exercise your freedom by riding with us next Saturday morning, then join us from 11:30am to 1:30pm at Big Daddy's BBQ (southwest corner of 40th St & Chandler Blvd in Ahwatukee. Great viewing venue, yummy food, good company... life is good.

Resealing Project Inspires Many Versions of Tour de Mesa

Added June 20, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 87 riders ignore the cloudy sunrise and appear at the park ready for the morning's adventure. A miles long resealing project on Lindsay gave us a last minute route adjustment. Eh, the map is always just a suggestion anyway. The herd flowed out to the east, with all following the same path to Extension, and then from there all bets were off. Every gaggle of pedalers developed their own version of what the best way would be to romp around and eventually turn back to the west. We think most of them returned back to the start. Or at least we filled up all of the chairs at Einy's, so close enough.

Coming up...

Saturday 6/27/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. We head to the hills of AhwaFooty, with route options of 24 miles with one brief climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner of Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

You adore riding, but your hands don't. You ride a few miles, and then notice that your paws feel tingly or like numb blocks attached to your wrists. There are various solutions, some easy, some take time and effort. The quickest fix is to use correct hand/wrist form when you ride. Whether you are riding the hoods (with your hands cupped around your brake hoods), riding down in the drops (on the lower part of your drop bars) or on top (with your hands on the top of the handle bars, up near the stem) your form for all of those hand positions is to have your wrists straight, not flexed. The back of your hand and your fore-arm should always form a straight line, with no bend in your wrist. Riding with your wrists bent compresses the nerves at the base of your hands, resulting in loss of sensation in your fingers. Occasionally lifting one hand off the bike at time and waving it around a bit helps a lot, too, and makes the car drivers think you are happily waving at them. Long term fix? Do your push-ups and crunches. Building strength in your torso and chest will reduce your habit of bracing your body weight against your handlebars for support. Waving at the cars sounds easier, doesn't it?

Ride safe.

Tall Corn, Red-winged Black Birds, and 86 Riders on Tour de Sue

Added June 14, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 86 riders appear this morning, tempted out by our awesome weather. The ladies rolled out first, escorting one lucky birthday boy, but they were soon chased down by the rest of the guys. There were a few creative route selections on the way south thru town, but everybody seemed to find the herd again at the first pit stop. As we passed the corner of Dobson & Queen Creek we were treated to the sight of incredibly tall corn, dotted with a sprinkling of red-winged black birds singing their little hearts out. Definitely a preview of sights and sounds for anybody headed to the ride across Iowa later this summer.

Coming up...

Saturday 6/20/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. Our Dad's Day Eve romp is the Tour de Mesa, a loop out the northeast. Route options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner of Guadalupe and McClintock.

Saturday 6/27/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. We head to the hills of AhwaFooty, with route options of 24 miles with one brief climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner of Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 7/4/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. Don your red/white/blue and join us for on a ride to Mummy Mountain. Route options 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with a couple of additional climbs. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe and McClintock.

Tid bits

Can you imagine planning a sit down dinner with several courses for 10 people and on the night of the event 20 people show up? Multiply that by about 10 fold and you get the issue that challenges our event ride leaders several times a year. The White Mountain Tour is approaching, we are less than a month out from the date. Casual polling of the club tells us that we will have 200+ at the ride this year, but few have registered. Go now to the White Mountain Tour page. Either print out our WMT registration form or follow the link shown to register online. The gentle weather that has been lulling us into thinking that summer isn't so bad here in the valley is eventually going to break. When it does, you'll be ready for pine trees and cool mountain air. Yes, there's some climbing along the route, but that just means there's some great descending to be had!

101 Riders for Length of Lindsey and Free Eats

Added June 6, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The perfect riding temp and the offer of free eats brought us 101 riders this morning. Members flaunting our club colors rolled out first, making an impressive looking team, until they were chased down by the remaining motley crew. The jump to our summer start time put several of the time challenged arriving after the pack had departed, resulting in a bit of sprint training for some. Having learned from the best, a few riders made a beeline to the restaurant, where they had to wait impatiently for the doors to open. The rest of the herd soon arrived, along with various family members and some of our rehab division. For those who have not before experienced the floor show known as our quarterly club meeting, hope you went home stuffed full of free food and giggles.

Coming up...

Saturday 6/13/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. We celebrate Flag Day Eve with a romp to the south on the Tour de Sue. Mileage options 25 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 6/20/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. Join us for the Tour de Mesa, a loop out the northeast.

Tid bits

We are a breakfast club, hence, we stop at the end of the ride for breakfast. But we really should call ourselves a brunch club, because that post romp recovery should be your second meal of the morning. As the heat rises, which we're pretty sure it's eventually going to do this summer, eating before you ride becomes very important. Even if you are hoping to drop weight, fuel before you pedal. Your body needs those calories and nutrients to use the hydration you are chugging. Every body works differently, and it may take a bit of experimenting to find the right combo that works best for you. Whole grain cereal or toast, low fat milk or yogurt, fruit, peanut butter, eggs... mix and match, seeking the blend that you enjoy and that makes you feel zoomie. Eat to live, live to ride, ride to eat, Grasshoppers.

Ride safely.

Last Romp of Spring: Mummy Mountain

Added May 30, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 85 riders appear for our last romp of the spring season. (And yes, that does mean we switch to summer hours of 6:30am next Saturday!) We managed to make it about one mile into the route before the first flat of the day, but it was a gorgeous morning even for standing around on a sidewalk working on a bike. Some fluffy clouds flitting about kept the temp down, making for perfect conditions for the climbs along the way. A few people said they were fairly sure they stayed on the actual mapped route for the entire ride, but that seems doubtful on the DIY Mummy route. At breakfast congratulations were offered up to Jack G. who, after being a cyclist for 20+ years, has just learned how to clean his bike. Never too late to teach an old dog new tricks. :-)

Coming up...

Saturday 6/6/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. NOTE THE CHANGE OF START TIME! And its time for FREE FOOD! Join us for PMBC's summer quarterly membership ride and breakfast meeting. Roll out with SatCycling on the Length of Lindsay, with routes options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast is at Home Town Buffet, northwest corner of Warner & Evergreen in Chandler. Breakfast is free to all PMBC members, $8 for non-members. If you are joining us at the restaurant, aim to arrive there about 8:30am. Our club clothing queen Cindy advises that our latest order has arrived. If you have pre-ordered clothing, or want to buy, we'll have those items available at the meeting.

Route options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner of Guadalupe and McClintock.

Tid bits

Non-cyclists ponder how we can possibly ride on the streets, with the danger of cars being right at our elbow. What they don't realize is that cars are not our greatest risk, vehicles actually come in at about third place. We are our own worst enemies. Cyclist into cyclist wipe outs are the most popular way to get injured on group rides, followed closely by creative solo manuevers that result in departing from your bike when you weren't planning to. When pedaling in a group, keep in mind you're in a group. Simplistic, but essential. If you need to stop during a ride, for any reason, get yourself off the road. Being run over by the cyclists behind you is a pain, literally. When you are rolling, no matter what else is going on, stay focused on the fact that you are in motion on a bike, and that motion doesn't stop if you get distracted. Arriving at the breakfast stop with tire tread marks across your torso usually results in having to do some explaining, which can be avoided by riding with care.

Ride safe.

Misting Rain at Sunrise on Quest to South Mountain

Added May 23, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

A bit of misting rain at sunrise didn't deter 72 riders from joining in on the quest to South Mountain this morning. The tailwind assisted romp over kept everybody fresh for the climb, even tempting one of the recumbent riders up to see what the Towers look like (he says he's 'bent, not broken). That oh so helpful wind from the roll out set us up for a challenging ride back, with everybody earning their breakfast.

Coming up...

Monday 5/25/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Have the day off? What better way to spend it than on a route that the entire pack usually gets lost on! In memory of Buddy, what else would we do? Buddy's Route, also known as the original verison of the AhwaFooty area, one mapped route of about 30 miles (bonus miles if you take in some scenic off-course rambling). Breakfast at Paradise Bakery, southwest of Ray & 54th St.

Saturday 5/30/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Our last spring romp, we head to Mummy Mountain. Route options 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with a bit more climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner McClintock & Guadalupe.

Saturday 6/6/09 6:30am Kiwanis Park. NOTE THE CHANGE OF START TIME! We switch to our summer hours and, to tempt you out of bed early, its time for FREE FOOD! If you are joining us at the restaurant, aim to arrive there about 8:30am. Tid bits

We had a traffic law enforcement zone set up during the ride today. A few riders asked why. Here, perfectly worded by someone else, is why.

And on an entirely different and much more upbeat note, Prez Waller wants to bless one of our existing club members with a free year's membership extension. This is just because he is a really nice guy and has nothing to do with him trying to build our number of members up during his presidential term to the largest the club has ever been. Here is how to enter for the drawing:

  1. Bring a copy of this SatCycling Tid-Bits section to the next Club Breakfast, jot your name on it.
  2. All entries will be entered and selected at random.
  3. Only one entry per person.
  4. The winner must be a club member in good standing (or seating). The award(s) may be transferred to someone else.

87 Patriotic Pedalers on Armed Forces AhwaFooty Romp

Added May 16, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 87 patriotic pedalers appear in the park for our Armed Forces romp this morning. Our lead out group was anyone that had ever served in the US military, which was a rather large and eclectic herd. Our senior veteran Joe never did admit exactly which conflict he did active duty in, just saying it was "awhile back". We did our traditional ramble around the Foothills area, with riders from our pack being seen headed in all directions, then held down the patio at AZ Bread telling tales.

Coming up...

Saturday 5/23/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. One last journey to South Mountain before the summer heat sets in. Route options of 27 miles with a little gentle climbing, 40 miles with moderate climbing, or 42 miles with oodles of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Monday 5/25/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Have the day off? What better way to spend it than on a route that the entire pack usually gets lost on! In memory of Buddy, what else would we do? Tid bits

The following isn't a PMBC event, but we have riders asking about it, so here's the scoop. This Wednesday May 20th at 7:00pm is the world wide Ride of Silence, with events being held all over the planet. The nearest ROS near our start point would be at the intersection of Guadalupe and Alma School, northwest corner (by the Dairy Queen). If you aren't familiar with the entire ROS concept, see their website at www.rideofsilence.org. If you plan to attend, you'll need full lighting (white front, red rear). Route will be about 10 miles round trip, parade pace (12mph), and in case you missed the point, with no talking. (It's a good thing HotAir doesn't read the Tid Bits section of the ride report, or he would be freaked at this moment just thinking about having to pedal without talking!)

St. Francis Loop Brings Out 82 Riders

Added May 10, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Our romp around town yesterday brought out 82 riders. The herd managed to sneak by the SheRox marathoners on the first loop thru downtown Tempe but on the return had to do a bit of police authorized wrong side of the bridge riding to get back over the lake while the gals where running for all they were worth. Bageling was apparently the thing to do, with Einy's jam packed for the post ride recovery refueling

Coming up...

Saturday 5/16/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Don your red, white, and blue as we celebrate Armed Forces Day with a romp to AhwaFooty. Route options 24 miles with one gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner of Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 5/23/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. One last journey to South Mountain before the summer heat sets in. Route options of 27 miles with a little gentle climbing, 40 miles with moderate climbing, or 42 miles and oodles of climbing.

Buddy's Route, also known as the original verison of the AhwaFooty area, one mapped route of about 30 miles (bonus miles if you take in some scenic off-course rambling). Breakfast at Paradise Bakery, southwest of Ray & 54th St.

Saturday 5/30/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Our last spring romp, we head to Mummy Mountain. Route options 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with a bit more climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner McClintock & Guadalupe

In today's rough economy, jobs are sometimes hard to come by. Here's one, just waiting for somebody to snap it up. The job only lasts one day, having a loud voice is a plus. The pay is primo, earning you the admiration and gratitude of your fellow club members and regular weekly ride leader. We need a club member to volunteer to lead Saturday Cycling on Saturday July 11th, which is the weekend of the club's White Mountain Tour. If you are not attending WMT and are planning to ride with SatCycling that morning, this is your chance to tell the entire pack where to go, your route map or a traditional one.

Ride on.

Free Food, Lots of Learning, and a Model Show

Added May 3, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

See what happens when we have free food on a nice day? We had 95 riders appear in the park this morning, ready for our roll to the northeast. Along the way today, we learned the difference between a two-way stop sign and a four-way stop sign, learned that our spot on the road is to the right of the bike lane line, and that if you're riding on the out bound with a sweet tailwind, there will be a price to be paid on the way back in! Thanks so much to the Landis store for an over the top pit stop, with great food and some good buys. Geno provided the floor show by modeling several jerseys for the crowd, making his selection only when the calls changed from jeers to cheers. Never under estimate the opinions of your peers.

Coming up...

Sunday 5/3/09 2:00pm at Big Daddy's Smokehouse. Note the time change! The broadcast time for the Tour of Romandie changed after we scheduled this gathering, so we are bumping the time to 2pm. Join us for eats and bike race watching. Location is southwest corner of 40th Street and Chandler Blvd in Ahwatukee. RSVP to Bob Beane if you are joining us.

Saturday 5/9/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The St. Francis Loop, with route options 26 miles or 36 miles, moderate climbing on both. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

There were a surprising number of riders in the pack today that had never been in the bike store that hosted our eats this morning. Considering this LBS (local bike store) is within a few miles of our home base, that's rather surprising. If you ride much, knowing where the nearest shop is can be very important, should you need mid-ride mechanical help or supplies. Also, in an era when you can buy anything off the internet and have it delivered to your doorstep, having a relationship with an LBS can also be a great resource to draw on. The next time you do self-inflicted mechanic damage, then need somebody to fix what you did, you'll be glad if somebody in a nearby LBS knows your name. And most are very good about not telling your friends the goofy thing you did to your bike!

Ride safe.

A Sinister Flock of Birds

Added April 25, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

A gentle breeze at dawn was a heads up to our 79 riders this morning, motivation to get out on the route and round the course before things got challenging. Our triumphant roll out start to the east lasted about a mile and a half before the lead riders missed a turn. Once we got that sorted out, the herd rolled on towards the canal bridge crossing on Lakeshore. Most of the pack made it past the sinister flock of birds that lie in wait under the bridge, that prey on unsuspecting cyclists. These are the same birds overheard snickering when a rider last year fractured his carbon frame against one of the bridge poles. This time they worked together as a team to distract one of our new riders, sending her conking into the other bridge pole. (Have you noticed the little cyclist stick figures etched into the side of the bridge wall there??) The remainder of the romp was spent wondering how many directions the wind can blow, but most managed to arrive eventually at breakfast stop.

Coming up...

Sunday 4/26/09 Noon at Big Daddy's Smokehouse. This isn't a ride, but you can definitely pedal to and from it! Private room, big screen TV plus individual screens at every booth, yummy food... oh, and we'll be watching pro-riders do their thing. Location is southwest corner of 40th Street and Chandler Blvd in Auwatukee. Event for this date will be race highlights from Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Fleche-Wallone. RSVP to Bob Beane so we know how many butts to expect.

Saturday 5/2/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. FREE FOOD! We have somebody offering to feed the Saturday Cycling herd, the Landis bike store at Price & Southern is hosting eats for the pack. We'll head out on the McKellips Loop first, with route options of 28 miles or 37 miles, both with one gentle climb, then stop in for free food, drinks, and shopping! Landis is located on the north side of Southern, just west of the Price/101 Freeway. If you can't make the ride, join us there, they'll have things set up starting about 9:00am.

Sunday 5/3/09 1:00pm at Big Daddy's Smokehouse. The spring classics keep on rolling. Join us for eats and bike race watching. Location is southwest corner of 40th Street and Chandler Blvd in Ahwatukee. We'll be watching the Tour of Romandie and gossiping about you if you don't show up. RSVP to Bob Beane if you are joining us.

Saturday 5/9/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Our rescheduled romp around the St. Francis Loop, hopefully without thousands of runners on the road. Route options 26 miles or 36 miles, moderate climbing on both. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

Some of the long time riders have noticed that we have a lot of new faces in the crowd. A number of newbies who discovered us this spring when they were training for the MS-150 event have decided that this cycling thing is kinda fun and have returned to continue on our weekly adventures with us. Saturday Cycling is open to all cyclists, but if you are going to stick around, how about officially joining the ranks of PMBC? Our club prez is upping the ante and advises that anyone who joins the club in the next two weeks will receive a stunning pair of socks for free! Head to the website, print out a form, zing it in. Your $15 gets you 4 free breakfasts a year, a monthly newsletter, discounts on a lot of event rides around the state, and various other assorted perks. You will have to hunt Waller down before the start of the May 9th Saturday ride to claim your free socks. If he runs out, he'll give you the pair off his feet, pre-warmed.

Ride safe.

A Route Switch to South Mountain

Added April 19, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 68 riders appear in the much drier than last week parking lot this morning. A few groans were heard from those that didn't know about the route switch. Apparently they left their climbing legs at home, though the originally planned route was pretty climby... so we're thinking they just like to whine. A gentle tailwind whisked us over on the roll out. Great to see some smooth new pavement along part of Dobbins. The herd scattered upon arrival at S Mt park, with a few holding down the wall at the stonehouse, many cruising out to San Juan and at least one trike headed to the Towers. A couple of our riders tried to talk their way onto the down-hill bike hauling truck, attempting a sneaky route to the top, but when they found they would be required to come down the off-road path with the other adventurous down-hillers, they chucked that plan. At breakfast we rubbed elbows with a lot of Tillman Run t-shirts, but what's a few more sweaty people when you're hungry?

Coming up...

Saturday 4/25/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The Tour de Sue takes us out onto the open roads to the south, with route options of 25 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Sunday 4/26/09 Noon at Big Daddy's Smokehouse. This isn't a ride, but you can definitely pedal to and from it! For those that missed our bike race watching debut at a new venue, you missed a great place.

FREE FOOD! No, it isn't time for another membership breakfast, but we have somebody offering to feed the Saturday Cycling herd. The Landis bike store at Price & Southern is hosting eats for the pack. We'll head out on the McKellips Loop first, with route options of 28 miles or 37 miles, one gentle climb, then stop in for free food, drinks, and shopping! Landis is located on the north side of Southern, just west of the Price/101 Freeway. If you can't make the ride, join us there, they'll have things set up starting about 9:00am.

Tid bits

Earth Day dawns shortly, and the perfect path to it is set out for cyclists in Tempe. Wednesday April 22nd is Bike to Work and School Day (or anywhere you need to get to). The city has even figured out that people are enticed to ride with FREE FOOD and FREE TSHIRTS! See Tempe's website for a complete list of the hosts that morning, all between 6am and 8am. If you are free to dawdle a bit, PMBC members are encouraged to appear at Whole Foods (northwest corner of Baseline & Rural) at 7:00am to escort Mayor Hugh to work in downtown. Then you can impress your friends, tell 'em you had breakfast with the mayor.

A Most Delightful Visit to Pet and Richard's Rose Garden

Added April 14, 2009

written by Mary Ellen Coe

The Sunday Kokopedali group headed out on a beautiful morning for a nice spin and the most delightful visit at Pet and Richard's house. Pet loves to ride, and she LOVES to garden and it shows! It's the most beautiful garden I've seen ever - the French impressionists would be more than inspired. The splays of color, beautiful roses, lilies, bouganvilla, orchids, ponds... WOW. Completely stunning. Pet was so gracious to have us over for plenty of food, drink, fun, and beauty. What more could anyone want?! Thanks Pet!

South Mountain: Into the Mist

Added April 12, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had about two dozen appear in the parking lot this morning. The sun broke out of the clouds 15 minutes before ride time. This prompted 16 of those milling about to actually sign in for the ride. Then it rained, hard, for about two minutes. This reduced the crowd to about 12, a few of which heard the siren call of hot drinks. So, 8 riders who apparently are willing to follow their ride leaderess to heck and back, rolled out into the rain. It was an absolutely lovely romp. Until we got about one mile out and Dennis's bike refused to roll one more inch, with the most creative chain drop ever seen. We left him at the side of the road (no mercy for the weak), and splatted on. The car free bike path heading towards S Mt was actually a beautiful ride. The smell of wet desert was tempting us to keep on cruising, though eventually the threat of hypothermia turned part of the group back towards home. The last few determined souls, led by Roger, continued on into the mist.

Coming up...

Saturday 4/18/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Word is out that the destruction along Oak has been finished, so we'll go check it out on the St. Francis Loop. Route options 25 miles or 36 miles, moderate climbing on both. Breakfast at Einstein's, McClintock & Gaudalupe.

Saturday 4/18/09 5:00pm to 7:00pm Spring Social! No this isn't a ride, but if you toss on some lights, you can pedal to and from it. PMBC invites all to our spring thing at Macayo's Depot Cantina at 300 S. Ash Avenue in Tempe. That's just west of downtown Tempe, near Rio Salado & Mill. Come hang out on the patio with us and enjoy some great mexy food. Terrific Tina reminds all that we need a head count to reserve the space, so if you plan on appearing, zip Tina Miller a note.

Saturday 4/25/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The Tour de Sue takes us out onto the open roads to the south, with route options of 25 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 5/2/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Since the rain will make for some great wildflowers, and we have a large pile of slightly water damaged maps to use up, we'll attempt a return to South Mountain. Route options 27 miles with gentle climbing, 40 miles with moderate climbing, or 42 miles with lots of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

A great invite has been extended to SatCycling and we have a whole bunch of new riders that should attend this. (Actually, we have some members that have been appearing with us for many years that should take this in!) Global Bikes is offering us a free bike clinic. A few of the areas they'll be discussing; what to carry with you on a ride, how to change a flat, how to boot a tire, chain repair, pre-ride check, and tire pressure. Date is Monday April 27th, 7pm to 9pm, at their Gilbert location which is 835 N. Gilbert Road. The class is free but we need you to let us know if you're joining us. You can RSVP on their Meetup link or call (480)892-1315. If we aren't riding, the next best thing is talking about riding!

Tom Reports the MS Round Up Ride Held in Florence on March 28-29

Added April 5, 2009

written by Tom Adams

Tim and I drove down to Heritage Park in Florence on Friday and spent the night there before the 2009 MS Round-up Ride. We were up early Saturday and it was chilly. I drove the rest stop 2 truck and Tim rode both days. Saturday had 40-, 75- and 100-mile routes, and the last century rider didn't clear our rest stop until about 2:45pm. That evening we poured beer at the Fat Tire truck for a couple hours and listened to the live band. You make a lot of friends when you give out free beer!

We were up early again on Sunday. Another cool morning, but not as chilly as Saturday. I drove out and set up at rest stop 2 where Jay Stewart and Rick Marquis were doing bike repairs. Rick had a great costume, and wore it to chase away the first group of hammers to stop at the rest stop. Sunday afternoon the wind came up, but it wasn't blowing hard.

Tour de Phx Reduced the Home Team to 37 Pedalers

Added April 5, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The temptation of paying to ride your bike (in the Tour de Phx) reduced the home team to 37 enthusiastic pedalers this morning. Our wind assisted roll out to the east made everybody look like a platinum rider. The quiet tree lined streets of Lehi gave us shelter for a bit before we headed back into town face on into a brisk breeze. We're in it for the calorie burn, right? Special thanks to pit crew Thinh (and his spit) and Lance for the flat assist just before we got back to the park.

Coming up...

Saturday 4/11/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. South Mountain, with route options 27 miles with a little gentle climbing, 40 miles with moderate climbing, or 42 miles with lots of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

After you've thrashed yourself in the TdP this morning, and kicked back at Bike-A-Palooza Sunday morning, keep up your cycling themed weekend going with watching the pro riders do their thing. Bob Beane has made spur of the moment reservations for anybody that wants to join him at Big Daddy's Smokehouse to watch the Tour de Flanders. Sunday April 5th, 2pm to 4pm, location is southwest corner of Chandler Blvd and 40th Street in Ahwatukee. You don't have to RSVP to attend, but if you know for sure you are going, zing Bob Beane a note so we have an estimated butt count.

If you are reading this ride report on Monday, well, see what you missed?

Ride safe.

Golf Tourney, Dragon Boats, and Arts Fesitval on Mummy Mountain Loop

Added March 29, 2009

Hi All!

Even the draw of the MS-150 ride couldn't trump the great weather today, we still had a herd of 73 riders roll out for our north bound adventure. As we cruised around the loop, we managed to dodge the golf tourney at Rolling Hills, slip back into town before the dragon boat drums started thumping, and con the gate-keepers at the arts fesitval into letting us slide right through the middle of their show. At breakfast we had a good turn out of our rehab group, now apparenly being headed up by our club prez!

Coming up...

Saturday 4/4/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Note the time change! If you are not headed to the Tour de Phoenix on this date, come join us for the Tour of Lehi, original route. Options of 27 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner McClintock & Guadalupe.

Saturday 4/11/09 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Before it gets too toasty, we'll make another search for wildflowers to South Mountain. Route options 27 miles with a little gentle climbing, 40 miles with moderate climbing, or 42 miles with lots of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

April is Bike Month in Tempe! Next Sunday April 5th, you're going to be done in after the Tour de Phoenix anyway, so how about a morning at Bike-A-Palooza? (Love that name.) Tempe's free bike festival will be held this year at our very own Kiwanis Park, running from 7:00am to noon. Lots of free stuff, a bike swap meet, entertainment, free t-shirt and a community bike ride departing at 8:00am. Bring a pair of used athletic shoes to donate and you get two free tickets to a bike raffle. Free snackies, free t-shirt, and a chance to win a free bike? These people have apparently figured out what draws cyclists!

A Colorful Herd Flowed Over to the Foothills

Added March 21, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The last weekend of training for those preparing for the MS-150 romp brought us 84 riders today. And what a perfect day for pedaling! Our colorful herd flowed over to the foothills, flitting hither and yon, who cares about the mapped route when it's this nice out?? The breakfast stop was so popular that we overflowed the tables and the room for bike parking, though the latter could just be due to our large (3!) trike division taking up so much space. We'll have to work on reserved parking for them or something.

Coming up...

Saturday 3/28/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. Mummy Mountain, original route, with options of 27 miles with a couple of climbs or 40 miles with a few extra climbs. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner McClintock & Guadalupe.

Thanks to the ride leaders and worker bees who made the Mining Country Challenge 2009 a grand success. We had a number of skilled photogs out on the course this year and our ever efficient webmaster (thanks, Terry!) already has a great photo gallery set up on our website.

And what is the next over the top cool club event ride you should have on your calendar?? Well, over the top and cool can both be found on the White Mountain Tour 2009. While you're checking out the website, read up on all the details posted for this July escape to the high country, coming up on July 11th and 12th. We have a brand new ride leader this year, Silverio Ontiveros, so you can expect a fresh new spin on this long time favorite romp for the pack. Silverio's first challenge is to come up with 10 willing volunteers who can assist him with putting on this primo event. Two days in the cool country, and if you volunteer you don't even have to pedal a bike, you can just loll about running a rest stop, or schlepping luggage or helping register people. Or you could volunteer your spouse or significant other and then you could pedal guilt free! In either case, we need a small army of warm bodies to zip an email to Silverio Ontiveros to advise you can help.

Tour de Mesa Draws 48+ Riders

Added March 15, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The draw of the Tour de Cure and our own club's Mining Country ride reduced the home team to 48 riders this morning. Actually, we had about 60 out with us, if you add in the dozen or so who arrived after sign-in closed, or who joined us as we rolled out the park. The romp over to Mesa was great in our perfect spring weather. Some of the long route riders were even tempted into a few bonus miles into Las Sendas, giving the standard route riders the chance to swoop in and claim the primo patio seating at breakfast before the big dogs got there.

Coming up...

Saturday 3/21/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. We head for the hills on the AhwaFooty route. Options of 24 miles with gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Kyrene & Elliot.

Saturday 3/28/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. Mummy Mountain, original route, with options of 27 miles with a couple of climbs or 40 miles with a few extra climbs. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner McClintock & Guadalupe.

Our lost and found gained a Novara water bottle during the ride today. It'll be at sign-in next Saturday, if you want to claim it, though you might want to swap out the beverage in it by that time!

And speaking of things lost and needing to be found, the unemployed division our club is growing by the week. We have so many members who have come to a parting of the ways with their jobs, that we are talking about starting up some mid-week club rides! But there are signs of hope blossoming here and there this spring. The club has been contacted by the Dick's Sporting Goods corporation, asking for help filling positions for bike technicians at some of their stores here in the valley. For further info on that, zip a note to Jennifer Currie in human resources for the southweast region. Hey, maybe you'll get an employee discount on bike gear!

Hungry Cyclists Gather for Breakfast, Meeting, and Awards

Added March 7, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The offer of free eats brought us 84 riders to the start at the park this morning, and we gathered hungry cyclists as we rolled along. The long route riders unexpectedly became participants in the Ostrich Festival Parade. (We're kind of a parade where ever we go, so rather fitting!) At the restaurant we were joined by our Sun Lakes division, who timed their arrival perfectly, getting there before the large herd descended.

For those that missed the meeting, the highlights were...

George and Evie Martinez were honored with an award for being the most volunteering couple we've ever seen in our club.

Roger Simmons received an award for riding so many miles last year that it was just silly.

And Matt Kas earned the Randy Eldridge Cycling Samaritan award for just oozing with the spirit of being an ambassador for cycling. (Who else totes around extra tubes that don't fit their bike, just to have them available for other cyclists?)

Satuday 3/21/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park.

Tid bits

It's been great to see some of our rehab division getting back in the saddle recently. Burnsie, Tater, Mz Clow, Kas, even Roger (who is responsible for doubling the size of our trike team). We have a few still out (Annie, we miss you!) and McFadden's long road to recovery continues. Mr. McFadden had hoped to be present at the breakfast this morning, but his body just didn't go along with that plan. He asked that a giant thank you be extended to all who have lent support, made calls and sent cards.

Our social maven Terrific Tina has asked that you block out the following date on your busy calendar. Our not to be missed spring club social will be held in the evening of Saturday April 18th. Watch the website for complete details, but the plan is a dinner gathering on the patio at Macayo's Depot Cantina, which is just west of downtown Tempe on Ash. We need a head (or butt) count for the reservation, so if you plan to attend, zip Tina Miller a note and let her know. If you don't attend, we'll make up entertaining stories about why you aren't there.

Ride safe.

Roundabout Route Offers Plenty of Hand Signal Practice

Added February 28, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Even an MS training ride offering free breakfast elsewhere in the valley didn't tempt away many of our riders this morning, we had 86 roll out of the park. The gritty roll around the route revealed that 40th Street continues to degrade with no sign of resurfacing, the wheel eating pot-holes there are growing in number and severity. Perfect day to practice hand signals pointing out hazards! We managed to work our way thru or around the charity walk in downtown Tempe (which some how had an incident severe enough that an ambulance was called... how hazardous can walking be?). A split decision was made at the food stop, with about half the group pancaking at IHOP and the rest bageling it at Einy's.

Coming up...

Saturday 3/7/09 7:30am Kiwanis Park. NOTE THE TIME CHANGE! Speaking of FREE FOOD, its time for our first quarterly membership breakfast of 2009. Location is the Home Town Buffet in Chandler, northwest corner of Evergreen & Warner. Ride with us from Kiwanis or if you are heading straight there, aim to arrive about 9:30am. SatCycling's route options will be the Tour de Sue in reverse, with choice of 25 miles or 35 miles, no climbing, but lots of eating. Breakfast is free to all PMBC members, $8 for non-members. Please fly your club colors (wear your club jerseys) and if you don't have one, we'll conveniently be selling clothing at the meeting, so bring a check or some cash!

How long do bike tires last? They last until they wear out. The point is, there are a lot of factors that impact how long your tires will last. Some tires wear better than others, and cost isn't a good indicator of life expectancy. Riding on rough road surfaces (like today) with lots of debris, eats tires up quick. If your tires are exposed to heat a lot, left in a car in the summer or stored in a garage, the material will degrade quicker. If when changing a flat you notice the bead (edge of the tire) peeling or crumbling and bits of black are popping off, its time to think about replacement. Some cyclists changed their tires out automatically when they reach a certain number of miles, but a better practice is to replace them when they look worn. Get in the habit of giving your tires a quick inspection once a week (preferably not 5 minutes before you are rolling out the door to join us). If you see worn spots or numerous cuts, your baby needs new rubber.

Beautiful Spring Weather for Length of Lindsay

Added February 22, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The beautiful spring weather this morning brought out 71 riders for our romp along Lindsay. Most of them actually completed one or the other of the mapped route options. A few got detoured by mechanical issues, flat tires, whacked knees, the call of pancakes mid-ride, etc. Along the way we spied George Martinez's brother working on a street corner. (Hey now, there's more than one job description that involves working street corners!) Some Saturdays are more adventurous than others.

Coming up...

Saturday 2/28/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. The Roundabout Route takes us around town, with route options of 25 miles or 35 miles, with a couple of climbs on the long route. Breakfast at IHOP, southwest corner College and Apache.

One of the lesser known aspects of the mission statement for our club is that we will work to promote cycling as a spectator sport. You could do that this weekend if you have cable (or if you want to drive about 6 hours) by watching the last couple of stages of the Tour de California. But we have a number of opportunities to watch cranked up cycling right here in our own backyard. Tomorrow (that would be Sunday 2/22, so if you are reading this later in the week on our website, too late!) the ASU cycling team is hosting a criterium race day in the ASU research park. That is located just west of the Price 101 freeway, between Elliot and Warner. The races will be going from 8am to about 4pm, with the big dogs riding last. If you have never watched Pro/Cat 1-2 riders doing a crit race, you should get yourself there by mid-afternoon and check it out. A cycling event that requires hay-bale protection on sign and light poles can make for interesting watching.

In Search of True Love on Mummy Mountain Route

Added February 15, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Just a wee bit of competition today (the club's J&P tour to Tucson, the Palm Springs Century, the Valley of the Sun stage race, and the start of the tour of California) reduced our home team to 51 riders this morning. But, we rolled out, enthusiastically in search of true love to the north, or at least a bit of winter sun to warm the cockles of our hearts. No sign of Cupid along the way, but we did find a few early wildflowers tucked into yards here and there. Upon our arrival at the bagel stop, a young girl was heard saying, "Look, Mom! There are girl bike riders, too!". Mom's answer? "Yes, girls can be fast, too, and they can do anything the boys do." You tell her, Mom.

Coming up...

Monday 2/16/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. Come join us on a presidential search for wildflowers at South Mountain Park. Route options 27 miles with one gentle climb, 40 miles with moderate climbing, or 42 miles with oodles of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Saturday 2/21/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. The Length of Lindsay, with route options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

The Senior Olympics are scheduled for Feb 21st thru March 15th in our area, and the call is out for volunteers to assist. They need bodies for office work in advance and also various worker bees at the actual events. If you can assist, contact Irene Stillwell at (480)495-5490 or Ken McKinney.

Predicted Rain a No-Show on McKellips Loop

Added February 8, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The non-appearance of the predicted rain this morning brought us 75 riders for our adventure over into Mesa. The gentle but persistent head wind across McKellips was rewarded afterwards with a sweet tailwind sweeping us back in. Our newly expanded trike division was well represented, with Roger rolling out in the pack with flags a fluttering. That thing is one low ride, he says its a bit disconcerting to be able to see under the cars next to you.

Coming up...

Saturday 2/14/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. We head north to Mummy Mountain, options of 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with a few extra climbs. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock. Dressing like Cupid is optional.

Monday 2/16/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. For those that noticed our holiday ride reflected the wrong day and date on the schedule last week, that was a test to see if you read the ride report!

Tid bits

Our stunning club jerseys give us visibility as an organization and are a good way for local cyclists to find out about us. They are also an excellent way for the non-cycling public to identify us. Immediately following today's romp, the following email message was received by the board of PMBC:

"This morning on my way to the QT (Quik Trip) at Extension and University in Mesa, members of the Metro Phoenix Bicycling club were in front of me on the road. Instead of riding in a single file to the right side of the road, which I believe bicyclists are supposed to do, they were riding three and four across which made it impossible for cars to get by them. This didn't really bother me, but when I got to the QT there were bicyclists in most of the spaces in front of the store including the two handicapped spaces. Would you please remind your cyclists to be mindful of the handicapped spaces and leave them open for those that badly need them? The cyclists don't know how fortunate they are to be able to ride bikes and have their mobility unlike some of us. My intention here is not to be mean, but to ask them to please be considerate of those that need the handicapped spaces. Thank you and enjoy your cycling."

A graciously worded message, that cuts the leadership of your club through the heart. We don't own the road, we share it. When you wear our jersey, you represent our club and the cycling community. Stay aware of your environment when you ride, what is going on around you. Doing so is not only a basic safety concept, but also a common courtesy.

Fording a River on AhwaFooty Route

Added January 31, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The beautiful early spring weather this morning tempted 77 riders out for our romp to the foothills. Fording a river that was for some reason flowing across 48th Street left the majority of the group looking more like splattered mountain bikers than road cyclists. But after that, things settled down into the usual rambling quest around various versions of the route. At the breakfast stop we were joined by several members of our expanding rehab division, so many in fact that Zach the therapy dog appeared to work the crowd. We're giving that dog way too much business.

Coming up...

Saturday 2/7/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. Note the time change! We start our swing back to earlier hours with the McKellips Loop, route options 28 miles or 37 miles, one gentle climb. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe and McClintock.

Saturday 2/14/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. One of the pack's favorite romps, we head north to Mummy Mountain. Options of 27 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with a few extra climbs. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock. Dressing like Cupid is optional.

Monday 2/16/09 8:00am Kiwanis Park. A holiday romp! If you have the day off, come join us on a presidential search for wildflowers at South Mountain Park. (If there hasn't been any more rain by this date, you'll just have to imagine the flowers!). Route options 27 miles with one gentle climb, 40 miles with moderate climbing, or 42 miles with oodles of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

The City of Tempe is done with the testing stage of the temporary traffic-calming devices they were trying out on College Avenue. A public meeting will be held this week, and this is your chance to voice your cycling themed thoughts about the final design. Tuesday Feb 3rd, 6pm to 8pm, at the Tempe Public Library (southwest corner of Rural & Southern), the city will present concepts for construction of streetscape and bicycle/pedestrianimprovements along College Avenue from I-60 to Apache.

And speaking of a need for traffic-calming, PMBC member Ron McFadden was struck by a car while on his bike commute home from work this past Monday. After three days of hanging out at one of our local hospitals, he is now home recuperating with 2 broken ribs and a fractured hip. Ron's injuries will keep him from his physically active job for several months and he has been denied disability insurance due to not being with his current employer long enough. There is potential for settlement with the auto insurance for the driver, but the dust will not settle on that for a long time down the road. While all of that is sorting out, some of Ron's friends have suggested that it would be nice to assist him from going bankrupt. (There is nothing sadder than a guy with shaved legs, dressed in a lycra racing kit, standing on a street corner begging.) If you would like to contribute, head to any Bank of America location, reference Ronald W. McFadden, account #004372507402.

84 Cyclists Roll Out for St. Francis Loop

Added January 25, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

The overcast at sunrise didn't deter 84 cyclists from appearing at the park for our morning's adventure. We rolled out, with the advanced riders heading east and the rest of the group headed west. The big dogs were on a mission to do the longer miles and still beat the back of the pack to breakfast (but they didn't, those ducklings rolled around their course lickety-split!) The beautiful skies and perfect riding temp followed us all around town. How often are the sunny seats at breakfast too warm in January? Love that Arizona weather.

Coming up...

Saturday 1/31/09 8:30am Kiwanis Park. Our last late start of the year, we're headed to AhwaFooty. Route options of 25 miles with one gentle climb or 35 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast corner Elliot & Kyrene.

Tid bits

Our bit this week is provided by Alex Stewart. Apparently the addition of a young son to his world has inspired him to dispense wise and helpful advice:

Getting traffic lights to detect a bicycle and trigger green can often be a frustration for cyclists. This can be especially true for left turn arrows where rolling over to the sidewalk crosswalk button is not a safe or practical option. Fortunately most intersection sensors in the East Valley are of the design and sensitivity that they can sense a bicycle, even a carbon fiber or aluminum one. The key is to have aluminum wheels and knowing where to place one's bicycle. This link provides guidance on the placement: http://humantransport.org/bicycledriving/library/signals/green.htm.

Note that most (if not all) sensors in the East Valley are of the quadrupole design (b) depicted in the article. So if you see the double square sensor cut outs on the pavement, place your wheels in the middle along the center cut. Contrary to folklore, one does not need a steel bike or a heavy vehicle. Nor are magnets or other contraptions needed.

At the next club ride, when making a left turn (for example westbound Main to southbound Extension), lead riders should try stopping in the middle of the quadrupole sensor. You may be pleasantly surprised to get a green arrow even with no other turning vehicles present. When one desires to travel straight this method works too, which is great if riding solo or in a small group. However, note that if the 'bike button' or 'pedestrian crossing' button is pressed, this often provides a longer green light cycle than the vehicle sensor alone, which will help our large weekend groups to all make it thru together.

Ride safe.

A Gorgeous Day for Tour de Sue

Added January 18, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

We had 67 riders appear in the parking lot for our morning's adventure. People were peeling layers before we even left, anticipating warm temps before we got back. We triumphantly got underway, with about the front third of the herd headed in the wrong direction out of the parking lot. (Great way to get the smarty-pants lead riders shuffled to the back of the pack!) Once we got everybody headed in the right direction, it was a gorgeous day to be out. AZ Bread has apparently wised up to our appearances there, having added to the seating on the patio, which we promptly hogged for some time.

Coming up...

Saturday 1/24/09 8:30am Kiwanis Park. The St. Francis Loop takes us on a figure eight up around the north part of town. Route options 26 miles or 36 miles, moderate climbing on both. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

Thanks to event leader Mary Ellen Coe we had a grand Casa Grande ride last Sunday. We're quite certain she had some pull somewhere to line up that perfect weather for the day! Our 402 participants (that's a lot of beans consumed), left us with a few memories of their trek, stocking up our lost and found box. We're still holding two items that need to find their owners. If you lost a pair of beige knit gloves or dropped your bike computer, please let us know. The bike computer has a large number of total miles logged on it, so we're assuming it's some rider's long time friend. Either that or somebody has figured out a way to fake mileage to impress their cycling buddies.

Tour de Mesa Turns to Tour de Construction

Added January 11, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Our Saturday morning herd was reduced to 58 riders this morning, with part of our normal crowd staying home to "save their legs" for our club's first century ride of the year tomorrow. (The rest of us were apparently wildly squandering our legs.) Off we rolled into a beautiful sunny AZ day, to discover that a lot of the city of Mesa is under construction. A few selected creative routes to dodge the chaos, with part of the pack putting their trust in Wayne to find them safe passage. (Since most of them arrived at breakfast, that trust appears to have been well placed.) The few sunshine warmed seats on the patio at Einy's were in big demand. Too bad that place doesn't have a retractable roof to accomodate the seasons!

Coming up...

Saturday 1/17/09 8:30am Kiwanis Park. We roll south on the Tour de Sue, with route options on either Queen Creek or Riggs Road. Mileage 25 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread Co, southeast corner Kyrene & Elliot.

Tid bits

It takes a village to create a cyclist. Until they perfect cloning, we'll continue to rely on our Saturday morning gaggles of riders to naturally sort out leaders. Once we get underway, things shake out, and then the large pack splits up into smaller groups of riders who are together as they are holding about the same pace. We expect these tossed together bunches to work together as "teams", with the more experienced riders stepping up to give guidance and set the tone for the riders around them. That applies if your group is riding at 12mph or at 25mph. The point is to learn to work together with other riders in a cohesive, safe, fun manner. If you are leading a line, you are responsible for the riders on your tail. Shift to thinking as a group, not as a solo rider. Anticipate traffic lights, judge if there is room for all to come thru with you without dragging the end of the line thru on red. If the line gets split at a light, soft pedal till those dropped can reconnect with you. In between the designated regroups on the route maps, feel free to make your own pit stops to help keep your bunch together. Under road racing conditions, its every rider for themselves. In recreational club riding, every rider looks out for all others in the group.

Ride safe.

Quest for Lucky New Year's Bean Burros

Added January 4, 2009

written by Sue Fassett

Hi All!

Our quest for lucky new year's bean burros brought us 67 riders this morning. The temp at start time was still a bit chilly, but cranking it out up some of the climbs on the outbound got everybody sufficiently warmed up. The light rail crossings caught the group a couple of times, but at least the trains are short and quick. An ingenious plot was hatched by the trailing riders to hop on the train, with bikes, cutting across the middle of the mapped route, allowing them to arrive triumphantly at the end ahead of the lead pack. It was decided that cheating would make them unworthy of the lucky bean burros though, so the group rolled on. SomeBurro's welcomed us with plenty of warm indoor seating and hot sauce for all.

Coming up...

Saturday 1/10/09 8:30am Kiwanis Park. As your warm-up to the Casa Grande Century the next day, we head out on the Tour de Mesa. Route options 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein's, northwest corner Guadalupe & McClintock.

Tid bits

During our New Year's Day romp to Lehi on Thursday, one of our riders dropped his breakfast cash from his pocket as we rolled along. A cyclist at the rear of the group picked it up and turned it in to lost and found this morning, where it was promptly re-united with its original owner. This action demonstrates a rather unique characteristic found in the tribe known as Cyclists. For the most part, we tend to be good neighbors in our "community", honest, looking out for each other. That attitude is extended not just to our club circle, but to other cyclists we might encounter out in the world. A person with a bike, stopped at the side of the road, generates an immediate response from other cyclists rolling by, with a call out to see if assistance is needed. We have each other's backs. If we could just get the rest of the billions of people on the planet to embrace that attitude, what a wonderful world it would be.
