The Last Ride of 2011
Added January 4, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
On Saturday our last ride of 2011 brought us 82 cyclists who had resolved to get just a few more miles in before the new year. The group rolled out into perfect weather for pedaling, or for standing at the side of the road changing flat tires. Most of the group made their way to the breakfast stop, some for no other reason than to check out what AZ Bread owner Carol might be wearing for New Year's Eve morn, fashionista that she is.
Coming up...
Saturday 1/7/12 8:30am Kiwanis Park. If you've resolved to ride your bike more in 2012, start it off right with a roll around the Tour de Mesa. Route options 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Paradise, southeast of Guadalupe & McClintock.
Saturday 1/14/12 8:30am Kiwains Park. We had north to Mummy Mountain, with route options of 31 miles with moderate climbing or 40 miles with some additional climbs. Breakfast at Einsteins, northwest of Guadalupe & McClintock.
Saturday 1/21/12 8:30am Kiwanis Park. We head to the hills, for the Foothills Training Ride. Route options of 25 miles with one gentle climb or 38 miles with moderate climbing. We'll be stopping by Javelina Cycles's new location, northeast of 48th St & Ray for a free continental breakfast on the way back in. We'll stop anywhere for free food!
Tid bits
You've committed to spending more time cycling in the new year. How about instead of resolving to ride more miles, you expand your biking world? Do you always ride a road bike? Rent or borrow a mountain bike for a day. Never bike commute? Rethink cycling from a sport to a form of transportation and pedal yourself to nearby errands. Never toured? Grab a back pack and ride yourself to a hotel on the far side of the valley and back home the next day. Road cyclists sometimes pedal with blinders on, seeing only the narrow slice of riding that they participate in. Open yourself up to the whole enchilda that being a cyclist as a way of life can be.
Ride safe.

South Mountain: Last Saturday Cycling Ride of 2012
Added December 30, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Forty-one cyclists signed in on a bright, clear December morning for the last Saturday Cycling ride of 2012. A few more joined along the route, which helped compensate for the 3 who went straight home from the start due to mechanical problems. The uphill-out and headwind-back gave us reason to appreciate the winter chill.
Coming up...
Note: Start time changes to 8:30am in January!
Tuesday, 01/01/13 8:30am, Kiwanis Park. Tour de Lehi
Ring in the new year with our new President. Armando will lead us on the traditional holiday ride for anyone who feels like popping up early on January 1 to begin accumulating 2013 cycling miles. Tradition also dictates that breakfast will be at Someburro's at Mill and Baseline.
Saturday, 01/05/13 8:30am, Kiwanis Park. MidSummer Ride
Our 4th hill climbing Saturday in a row. Route options of 28 miles with one climb or 38 miles with a couple of bonus hills. Breakfast at Paradise Bakery, SE corner of Guadalupe and McClintock.

A flat loop to the south, with route options of 25 or 35 miles. Both routes include a good long stretch with no traffic lights. Breakfast stop at AZ Bread Co. in Tempe at Kyrene and Elliot.
Tidbits...
Do you know anyone who has made a new years resolution to dust off their cruiser and learn to navigate our suburban streets by bicycle? PMBC is offering a new series of rides especially for the road-riding beginner. Club members Bob and Lee Evans are leading Tuesday and Friday no-drop, instructional rides in Sun Lakes. Both are Certified Cycling Instructors and run a similar summertime program in Boston's suburbia. Please tell all your wanna-be cyclist friends, and encourage them to come out and give it a try. All the details here.
Coincidentally, CAzB is offering a beginner road cycling class at various dates and locations across the valley. Details here. Opportunities abound to ramp-up new cyclists in the new year.
Reminder: Sunday Dec 30 is the last day to get the early registration discount for the Casa Grande Century ride on Sunday Jan 13.

Mummy Mountain: First Ride of the Winter Season
Added December 23, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Sixty-nine cyclists signed in today for the 1st ride of the winter season. Santa was there with candy-canes for all. I expected a bigger number for the Mummy Mountain route. Maybe we lost a few to last minute shopping. Thanks to roadside mechanic Dave L. who demonstrated that a broken spoke does not need to end your ride. He was able to return the wheel to true by tweaking the other spokes, enabling Jules to continue on to the finish.
Coming up...
Saturday, 12/29/12 8:00am Kiwanis Park. South Mountain
Route options of 24 miles with a bit of gentle climbing, 38 miles with moderate climbing, or 39 miles with the longest steady climb within 20 miles of Kiwanis Park. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast of Elliot & Kyrene.
Note: Start time changes to 8:30am in January!

Our 4th hill climbing Saturday in a row. Route options of 28 miles with one climb or 38 miles with a couple of bonus hills. Breakfast at Paradise Bakery, SE corner of Guadalupe and McClintock.
Statistical Tidbits...
If you've been playing along on BikeJournal.com, it's time to get caught up on your 2012 data entry. As it stands, PMBC is #3 out of 783 clubs! Only 1 of the other top 5 is a local club like ours, and they have 4 times more riders journaling. The other 3 list their locations as: Australia, International and The Interweb.
For more fun with data, I've created a short survey to see if there is anything about Saturday Cycling that we may want to tweak. It's only 5 questions long, plus an opportunity to add comments. It covers our route distances, profiles, start times, and breakfast stops. Survey Monkey's free service only allows for 100 participants, so if you have an opinion, don't delay. Just go to this link, it will only take a minute.
Reminder: If you haven't done it yet, it's time to register (or volunteer) for the Casa Grande Century ride.

Thirty Optimists Show on a Cool, Grey Morning for Foothills Ride
Added December 16, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Thirty optimists showed up today and were rewarded with a beautiful, cool, grey morning with just a little mist of a rain towards the end. The kind of day we dream of in the summer months. Unfortunately, there was one slippery railroad track accident. Thank you Scott for lending aid. Another thank you to the volunteer who led us in a pre-ride moment of silence to honor the innocent victims of yesterday's horrific violence in Newtown, CT.

Wednesday, 12/19/12 7:00pm at Bleachers. Christmas Lights Ride

Saturday, 12/22/12 8:00am Kiwanis Park. Mummy Mountain
One our most popular routes. A 40 mile loop with lots of climbing, or 31 miles with a couple of moderate climbs, takes us north into Scottsdale and around Mummy Mountain. Breakfast stop at Paradise Bakery at McClintock and Guadalupe.

Tidbits...
Santa Claus has put together an annual cycling trek to see the Christmas lights in the Foothills. The ride will begin at 7pm on Wednesday 12/19 at Bleachers--just northwest of 40th/ S. Mountain Parkway and Chandler Blvd.
The Route is less than 18 miles with gentle climbing in the foothills. It WILL BE a slow pace and the route winds up to Ahwatukee and back around the Ray/Chandler Loop. Santa rode it easily (cut the jokes) in an hour and 5 minutes. With one stop for warm libations, it will be done before 9 PM. DRESS WARMLY---heart rates will not be raised.
Please RSVP to Neal Thomas to indicate number of riders in your group and if you will be staying at Bleachers post-ride.
And on the subject of holiday cheer... here is a little bike-themed Christmas music courtesy of Scott (the roadside assistant) Barvian:

Soft Spoke'N and Out Spoke'N
Two New Weekly Rides Roll Out Beginning in January 2013
Added December 16, 2012
by Bob and Lee Evans
Pedal Power
See Sun Lakes by Bike
Join us for a series of relaxed, twice weekly bicycle rides exploring Sun Lake's network of roads and perhaps some neighboring ones if that's what it takes to find a mid- or post-ride coffee shop. Beginning January 8th, these hour and a half to two hour tours will launch from the flag pole at the Cottonwood Clubhouse every Tuesday and Friday afternoon at 1 pm, returning by 3 pm unless we're having too much fun to stop. The program is conducted under the auspices of the Phoenix Metro Bicycle Club and is free of charge but, to control group size and make certain no one's left behind, registration is necessary by 5 pm of the day prior to the ride. Groups are limited to a maximum of ten riders.
Tuesday is "Soft Spoke'N" day, designed to cover five or six essentially traffic-free miles and afford the leaders plenty of time to answer questions about bikes, offer cycling tips, and demonstrate safe riding skills. The plan for Friday's "Out Spoke'N" rides is more demanding; these will go about twice as far and work on becoming comfortable "sharing the road" with motor vehicles.
Helmets are required for these rides, fancy bikes are not. Hybrid, comfort bikes, or mountain bikes are recommended but, if they're what you have, road bikes are perfectly acceptable.
To register send an email to Lee Evans.
Leaders Bob and Lee Evans, Sun Lakes residents, have over sixty years cycling experience between them. For the past eleven years they've conducted programs similar to the above in the Boston suburbs. Both are Certified Cycling Instructors, retired racers, ex bicycle commuters, and former off-road crazies who now confine their riding to "civilized" surfaces. Check out their website, Get Up and Go Adventures, for a glimpse of what their New England summertime rides are like. Email Lee Evans if you have questions. We will utilize the website for information about the Sun Lakes rides.

Length of Lindsay to Membership Meeting
Added December 9, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Word I heard is that 160 cyclists participated in the Free Ride Dec. 1st. Speaking for myself, a good time was had by all!
Eighty-six cyclists signed in for today's ride to Jason's Deli, and I'm sure more than that were at the membership meeting. The food line looked longer than usual to hungry me. When President Ron offered a consolation prize to anyone who had a flat tire today, there were no takers! I did declare December to be no-flats month. Thank you all for your cooperation.
Coming up...
Saturday 12/15/12 8:00am Kiwanis Park. Foothills Training Ride
Let the climbing begin! The Foothills Training Ride takes us on a loop through the Ahwatukee Foothills with options of 25 miles with one gentle climb, or 38 miles that will take you on 5 more. If you can follow the spaghetti-bowl long-route map, you will have gone up and down all 5 approaches with no repeats and no U-turns. Breakfast at AZ Bread Co. at Kyrene and Elliot.
Tidbit...
Another contentious campaign season is behind us. Ensuring that every vote was counted, here are the winners who were elected as our 2013 PMBC club officers:
- President: Armando Charvet
- Vice President: Kevin Peffly
- Treasurer: Wendell Hollinshead
- Secretary: Margi Clarkson
After 4.5 years at the helm, Ron Waller has once again stepped down from the Presidency. Kevin and Wendell each agreed to serve a second term. Armando transitioned from ad-hoc board member to become our new president. And we welcome Margi as the newest member of the board, replacing Jennifer Siart who was our excellent 2012 secretary. They all deserve our thanks and appreciation for what they have done, and will do in the coming year, to keep PMBC awesome.

Three Straight Days of Holiday Weekend Riding
Added November 25, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Sixty-five riders gathered together on Thursday to give thanks to Armando for volunteering to make a Thanksgiving Day ride happen. And to show that no good deed goes unpunished, Armando suffered the only flat tire. He reports that the old familiar line at Einstein's was out the door as usual, just like we remembered it.
On Black Friday, 26 riders came out to thank Scott for crafting a route to the southeast for us, followed by a pleasant breakfast on the sunny patio of Paradise.
Today, 62 riders signed in to round out three straight days of holiday weekend riding. A fast flight to the west was rewarded by uphill headwinds most of the way back. By my count, we had better than 50% of the pack at the breakfast stop. 'Tis the season.
Coming up...
Saturday 12/01/12 8:30am Pioneer Park, Mesa. Free Ride
Time for the 8th annual Free Ride! PMBC hosts this sag-supported, no-fee ride as a thank you to our members and a celebration of cycling. All cyclists are welcome, membership is not required. Sign-in opens at 8:00am. The start location is Pioneer Park in Mesa, and include options of 25, 40, and 60 miles, with a great post-ride BBQ back at the park. All the details posted here. (There is no club hosted ride from Kiwanis Park in Tempe on this date.)
Note: Saturday Cycling start time changes to 8:00 am in December!
Saturday, 12/08/12 8:00am, Kiwanis Park. Length of Lindsay
Change of plan: Quarterly meeting moved to Jason's Deli. Time for another Quarterly Membership Meeting! As always, that means free breakfast for club members. This time, at Jason's Deli in Chandler on Fry Road just South of the Chandler Mall. You can get there by joining us for the Length of Lindsay route - options of 27 miles or 39 miles, no climbing - or be at Jason's Deli for sign-in starting at 9:30. The meeting should begin around 10:00.
Saturday 12/15/12 8:00am, Kiwanis Park. Foothills Training Ride
The Foothills Training Ride takes us on a loop through the Ahwatukee Foothills with options of 25 miles with one gentle climb, or 38 miles that will take you on 5 more climbs. If you can follow the spaghetti-bowl long-route map, you will have gone up and down all 5 approaches with no repeats and no U-turns. Breakfast at AZ Bread Co. at Kyrene and Elliot.
Tidbit...
Remember when we would frequent the Bruegger's Bagel shop on Mill Ave for a breakfast stop, 'till they went out of business? Remember how we had quarterly membership meetings at the Home Town Buffet on Warner Road; then poof, they were gone? Remember that we were alternating between Jason's Deli and The Home Town Buffet on Scottsdale Road for our quarterly meetings? Well, not any more. Another Home Town Buffet has abandoned us. I guess 100 cyclists twice a year wasn't enough customers to sustain a business.
Good thing our Social Director, Tina, called to confirm. Also fortunate is that our friends at Jason's Deli by the Chandler Mall are still doing well and were able to accommodate us on short notice. Thanks for watching out for us Tina!
It did however, mess up my plan to declare December as No Flats Month. Now, other than the 8th when we'll take the usual Length of Lindsay route to Jason's, every Saturday from Dec 1 to Jan 5 will be some of our biggest hill climbing challenges. That should help keep us warm through the winter solstice, as well as burn off those holiday calories.
Helpful Hint: If you're a little late and unsure of the route, we always put a few maps under the windshield wiper of the white 4Runner.

Tour de Tucson Reduces Ridership to 50 for St. Francis Loop
Added November 18, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
I'm guessing we lost some riders to El Tour de Tucson today as our number of sign-ins dropped to 50, with a scant 8 opting for the shorter standard route. As you know, four flat tires on any given Saturday is not unusual. However, all on the same bike is probably a record. Congratulations German!
Coming up...
Thursday 11/22/12 7:30am, Kiwanis Park. Tour de Lehi
Our volunteer coordinator, Armando, recruited himself to lead the annual pre-feast Thanksgiving Day ride out to the quiet streets of Lehi. Route options of 27 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Einstein Bagels, NW corner of McClintock and Guadalupe (yes, they are open on Thanksgiving Day).
Friday11/23/12 7:30am, Paradise Bakery at Ray and Coronado. Black Friday Ride
The annual "Just Say No To Shopping" ride will start and end at the Paradise Bakery on the SW corner of Ray and Coronado in Chandler (just East of the 101). Route options of 27 and 37 miles explore some newly improved roads in the far SE corner of Phoenix Metro. Thank you Scott Barvian for volunteering to lead.
Saturday 11/24/12 7:30am, Kiwanis Park. Paseo de Cesar Chavez
This 34.5 mile-long route takes you all the way west past 35th Ave going park-to-park from Kiwanis in Tempe to Cesar Chavez in Phoenix, and back. The standard route turns back at 7th Ave for a 25.5 mile loop. Both routes are mostly flat. Breakfast is at AZ bread Co at Kyrene and Elliot.
Saturday 12/01/12 8:30am, Pioneer Park, Mesa. Free Ride
Time for the 8th annual Free Ride! PMBC hosts this sag-supported, no-fee ride as a thank you to our members and a celebration of cycling. All cyclists are welcome, membership is not required. Sign-in opens at 8:00am. The start location is Pioneer Park in Mesa, and includes options of 25, 40, and 60 miles, with a great post-ride BBQ back at the park. (There is no club-hosted ride from Kiwanis Park in Tempe on this date.)
Tidbit...
As you can see, there are several special rides coming up. First on Thursday to build up your appetite for the Thanksgiving feast I hope you'll be enjoying. Then on Friday to burn off the pumpkin pie – I'll probably have a slice pre-ride for breakfast if there's any left.
It's hard to believe we're already up to our 8th Free Ride. As I recall, we conducted a survey at one of our quarterly meetings asking members what we should do with our surplus funds; or maybe it was just, "how can we be an even better club?" Either way, the most popular answer was: reduce the supported ride fees. So the board decided that at the end of the year we would host a free, fully supported member appreciation event, complete with complimentary lunch. Plus, we opened it up to all cyclists. Consider it a cheap opportunity to introduce your friends to the joy of recreational cycling. We'll have membership forms on hand at the finish in case we hook any newbies. And, if my feeble memory is not failing me, I believe Glen Fletcher has organized and led this event all 8 times. Thanks Glen!
I know of at least one friend who has been riding with us to train for tomorrow's IronPerson race. Good luck with that Tammy!
Lastly, don't forget to register for the 2013 Casa Grande Century on January 13. There is a discount for early registration. And there are still opportunities for volunteers to help make it happen.

Beautiful, Crisp Autumn Day for New Chandler Bronze Route
Added November 11, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Sixty-eight signed in to test ride a new route through Chandler. After a week of pessimistic weather forecasts, by ride time the threat of rain had vaporized, and the wind ranged from zero to light. It was a beautiful, crisp autumn day for a ride. You just can't take those long range forecasts too seriously.
Coming up...
Saturday 11/17/12 7:30 am, Kiwanis Park. St. Francis Loop
Both the 25 mile or 36 mile loop options include three moderate climbs, taking you north through Papago Park, around the St. Francis Cemetery, and returning to Tempe via south Scottsdale. Breakfast after, at Paradise Bakery at McClintock and Guadalupe.
Thursday11/22/12 7:30 am, Kiwanis Park.
Saturday 11/24/12 7:30am, Kiwanis Park. Paseo de Cesar Chave
This 34.5 mile long route takes you all the way West past 35th Ave going park-to-park from Kiwanis in Tempe to Cesar Chavez in Phoenix, and back. The standard route turns back at 7th Ave for a 25.5 mile loop. Both routes are mostly flat. Breakfast is at AZ bread Co at Kyrene and Elliot.
Tidbit...
Thank you to all who offered comments regarding today's new route. Those who create new maps, looking to add more variety to our Saturday rides, really do appreciate the feedback.
We heard that there was some discomfort with traffic on the kitschy stretch of Highway 87 between Guadalupe and Chandler Blvd (I noticed that Arizona Ave. is actually still Country Club Dr. at Guadalupe, so that was mislabeled). The left turns off wide, heavily trafficked streets was another concern. The regroup Circle K didn't allow us to use the restrooms; that's a big problem. On top of that, the construction on Ocotillo and the complete closure of AZ ave at downtown for tonight's block party has me thinking: Bronze-schmonze. We may not pull this route out again till Chandler gets to Gold level BFC. We still have 12 or 13 other routes to rotate through, and I have a couple of other new ideas in mind for a later date.
No one mentioned the clip-art icons. I just want to point out that the technology man at the two Intel sites was our VP Kevin working his day job. Good likeness, eh?

Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Looks like we made a smooth transition to the November 7:30 start times with 92 cyclists signing in for the refined McKellips Loop ride. After fighting the headwind through the reservation, the relocated regroup was a welcome rest stop. High time for layer shedding as well – ‘tis the season.

The long route adds a run past the municipal airport, and the world-famous Intel manufacturing site. The map will be posted on the web site soon. Breakfast at AZ bread Co at Kyrene and Elliot. Route Alert: The extended route will encounter a construction zone on Ocotillo. The road will be narrow but smooth, with a 25mph posted limit. Plan to take the lane and power through.
Saturday 11/17/12 7:30, Kiwanis Park.

Holiday Tidbit...
It's a PMBC tradition to schedule rides for national holidays – days designated for skipping work to put in extra bicycling miles. We also like to mix things up a little on those special rides by having someone who is not a regular weekly ride leader take the helm. Possibly with a new or seldom used route, or even an alternative start location. But currently we have nothing scheduled for the Thanksgiving Holiday!
I'd like to encourage experienced substitute ride leaders, board members, aspiring new ride leaders, or even former ride leaders to offer up a ride for the 22nd or 23rd. You can make up a new route, or choose a favorite from any of our standard weekly rides. December 24th, 25th and January 1st are other near term opportunities. If you're new to the role, I'd be happy to help get you oriented. (Smart people have suggested that we write a ride-leader manual, but it hasn't happened yet).
Please contact me or Glen Fletcher if you are willing and able to help keep this holiday tradition alive.

From the don't-try-this-at-home department...
Last weekend a visiting couple from Tulsa rented bikes and joined us for the Mummy Mountain ride. On Monday they sent me a thank you note, along with this:
Since you are organizing the routes now, I thought you might be interested in this link. It had some creative route adjustments.
It's amazing the things you can do with a top-of-the-line road bike!

Hello Saturday Cyclists,

We'll circle around to approach the Ahwatukee-Foothills from the South. 24 mile or 35 mile options with moderate climbing on the longer route. Breakfast at AZ Bread Co.
Saturday, 11/03/12 7:30 Kiwanis Park. McKellips Loop
NOTE THE TIME CHANGE IN NOVEMBER. This 28 mile or 37 mile loop from Kiwanis Park in Tempe will take you north through Tempe and then east through Mesa on McKellips Road before returning to Paradise Bakery for breakfast.
Saturday, 11/10/12 7:30 Kiwanis Park. Yet to be named new route.
I'm planning to roll out a new route focused around our hometown of Chandler that brings us to AZ bread for breakfast. More details when the map is actually created.
Tidbits...
Our volunteer ride organizers have already been busy (since about July) planning for the first major event of 2013: The Casa Grande Century! It's on Sunday January 13, so you won't have to miss Saturday Cycling. Registration through Active.com is already live; you can sign up anytime now. Do it before Dec 30 and you get a price break. In order to keep the volunteer labor low, especially for our valiant treasurer, we are accepting on-line registration only for this ride at no additional cost above the ride fee. Of course, checks or cash will be accepted the day of the ride for those who wait until the last minute.
There are still opportunities for more volunteers to help pull off this big event. If you've ridden it before, you might consider making this your year to work it instead.
Get all the details from the Casa Grande Century page.
And pass the word. It's a good way to entice your out-of-town bike friends to stop shivering in the cold and come visit you in AZ.

"We had 74 riders; no accidents; no incidents."
We all know Ron as a man of very few words.
On Saturday Oct 13th, we had 57 cyclists sign in for another week with no incidents. A lot of us dusted off our light jackets for the first early blast of cool weather.
Coming up...
Saturday, 10/20/12 7:00 Kiwanis Park. Mummy Mountain

NOTE THE TIME CHANGE IN NOVEMBER. This 28 mile or 37 mile loop from Kiwanis Park in Tempe will take you north through Tempe and then east through Mesa on McKellips Road before returning to Paradise Bakery for breakfast.
Tidbits...
There are leadership opportunities at PMBC in 2013. A couple of this year's board members are ready to peel off the front and let someone new take a pull. We are a 100% volunteer run organization. Being on the board isn't really very difficult, since we aren't trying to get rich or save the world. We just want to have fun. Being a board member means even more opportunity for good times with cycling friends. If you're interested in getting involved, please contact Glen Fletcher; or just reply to me and I'll see that he and the nominating committee get the message. According to the bylaws, November 15th is your deadline.

A Visit to the Towers of South Mountain
Added September 30, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
92 signed up to retake South Mountain. Our last visit to the towers was April 21. Here's the new trick I learned today: if you think your tire may be getting old and need replacing soon, just over-inflate it. If it blows up after a few miles, you'll know you needed a new tire.
Coming up...
Start times remain 7:00 in October – it's tradition.
Sunday, 09/30/12 7:00am in Maricopa. Ride Around Maricopa
This is a special Fifth Sunday ride, led by Jerry Bricker. A no drop ride with an easy to moderate pace for a fun social ride rather than a competitive ride. Expect 25 to 35 miles depending on the condition of the attending riders and that day's weather. Get details in the Ride Schedule.
Saturday, 10/06/12 7:00 Kiwanis Park. MidSummer Ride
Route options of 28 miles with one climb or 38 miles with a couple of bonus climbs. Special breakfast stop at Ncounter on Mill Ave at 3rd street where you can sit on the patio and watch the pre-parade parade by for the Tour de Fat at Tempe Town Lake. I'm only sorry Janet and I will miss it. President Ron will cover the ride leader duties.
Saturday, 10/13/12 7:00 Kiwanis Park. Tour de Sue
A flat loop to the south, with route options of 25 or 35 miles and a long stretch with no traffic lights. Breakfast stop at AZ Bread Co in Tempe at Kyrene and Elliot.
Saturday, 10/20/12 7:00 Kiwanis Park. Mummy Mountain
Arguably the most popular SatCyc route. A 40 mile loop (with a 31 mile option) north into Scottsdale and around Mummy Mountain. Breakfast stop at Paradise Bakery at McClintock and Guadalupe.
Safety tidbits
My top 2 traffic safety tips are both qualities most teenagers abhor. Be conspicuous, and be predictable. Both help to ensure that we don't surprise the other vehicle operators. We have conspicuous nailed on Saturday mornings. Stark daylight, crazy bright colors, and we travel in packs.
To be predictable in traffic, follow the rules of the road. You're not being predictable if you make up your own rules as you go. Maintain a predictable, straight line and steady pace. Signal your intentions. When the right-of-way isn't yours, yield. When it is, proceed promptly so the next in line doesn't get confused or delayed.
Riding in a pack of cyclists requires heightened predictability. Even when you're not looking for a pace line, someone behind you will be. Always keep a steady, predictable position and pace. Don't startle the others in the herd. Signal your turning, stopping, slowing, and nose-blowing. Point/call-out road hazards; especially the lead dogs. Watch out for each other.

80 Cyclists Ride Into Autumn
Added September 22, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
80 signed in on a comfortable summer morning, then rode their way into autumn as the equinox occurred 49 minutes from the start. One pedal-assembly, and several tire repair clinics were held. I was fortunate to flat near a trash pile, where Joe taught me that the liner of a cigarette box makes an ideal tire boot. I'll see you other victims at the bike shop.
Coming up...
Saturday, 9/29/12 7:00 Kiwanis Park. South Mountain
Summer is over! It's time to return to the mountain top. Route options of 24 miles with a bit of gentle climbing, 38 miles with moderate climbing, or 39 miles with the longest steady climb within 20 miles of Kiwanis Park. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast of Elliot & Kyrene.
Saturday, 10/06/12 7:00 Kiwanis Park. MidSummer Ride
No, summer did not return already. I just wanted a route that would bring us home through downtown Tempe, because it's time again for the Tour de Fat. Route options of 28 miles with one climb or 38 miles with a couple of bonus climbs. Special breakfast stop at Ncounter on Mill Ave at 3rd street where you can sit on the patio and watch the pre-parade parade by.

Here are a couple of non-PMBC cycling events coming up that have been brought to my attention:
On Sunday, September 30th from 8:30 to 3:00, the Brett Saks Foundation is hosting their first annual Brett Saks Safety Festival at Chandler's Tumbleweed Park (On McQueen south of Germann). Proceeds benefit Arizona Disabled Sports' cycling program. This Foundation was established in honor of it's namesake who was struck and killed by a motor vehicle while training for a charity ride in 2008. They focus on advocacy, education and out-reach. Visit: http://brettsaksfoundation.org/ to learn more.
Sunday, October 7th at 8am will be the start of the Domenic Mavestuto Memorial Ride at Western Star Park in Ahwatukee. The ride will be 15-20 miles followed by a breakfast stop. Domenic Malvestuto was the founder of Domenic's Bicycle Shop in Tempe and former leader of the Strada Racing Team. He passed away a year ago on October 6th. Here is a facebook link for that event: https://www.facebook.com/events/339302259491656/

Monsoon Season Declared Over
Added September 16, 2012

Hello Saturday Cyclists,
There's always a good turn-out on free food day. Even with several regulars hiding out in Italy this week, we still had 98 cyclists sign in, and probably even more showed up for the quarterly membership meeting. It was a beautiful morning for a ride and I am ready to declare that the monsoon season is over! We now can go back to enjoying the dry heat.
Coming up...
Saturday, 9/22/12 7:00 Kiwanis Park. Tour de Mesa
The Tour de Mesa takes you to the northeast, with route options of 29 miles with no climbing or 39 miles with a gentle climb. Breakfast is back at Paradise Bakery @ Guadalupe & McClintock.

You may remember a year ago when we stopped at Ncounter in downtown Tempe for breakfast and watched a seemingly endless parade of eclectic bicycles ridden by some eccentric cyclists on their way to the Tour de Fat at Tempe Town Lake. I do, and thought it was a hoot. We continued to see silly cycles all the way down College on our way back to Kiwanis. All rolling toward the lake for the big event.
This year's Tour de Fat falls on Oct 6th and we will once again attempt to occupy the patio at Ncounter where we can enjoy the show. If your inner child wants to come out to play, registration begins at 9:00 and the real parade starts at 10:00. Just roll on over from the breakfast stop.
New Belgium Brewing sponsors the event which will raise funds for The Mountain Bike Association of Arizona (MBBA) and Tempe Bicycle Action Group (T.B.A.G.).

Rider Count Hits the Century Mark on Foothills Training Ride
Added September 9, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Here is the report from Ed on the Labor Day Ride he led last Monday:
"Was a nice ride today, lots of clouds to keep the heat at bay, 56 riders signed the sheet (but I know some did not and a few snuck in on the ride down the road). I checked a couple riders stopped but no flats to speak of. At Breakfast there was a lot of talk about being worn out from this ride, I am sure all the hills brought that on, in addition some have ridden Saturday and Sunday already!"
For this Saturday, we reached the century mark for the first time in a long while. Exactly 100 people signed in to randomly wander around the Ahwatukee Foothills. I knew when I created this map that the long route section after the regroup would be tricky to follow. But we counted 5 people who wandered off map before even getting to the regroup. Then Janet and I, along with two others, chatted our way past the right turn on Briarwood and got to do our own u-turn correction on the way back. Ah well. There are many paths that will eventually lead to where we grasshoppers [Sueism] are ultimately heading.

You can get there by joining us for the Length of Lindsay route - options of 27 miles or 39 miles, no climbing - or be at Jason's around 9:00. The meeting will commence shortly after, when the last of the long route riders arrive.

I am a data geek. When I took the Saturday Cycling reins in June, I dug back in my email archives all the way to Sep 3 2011 to record the weekly route and the head count. I now have a full years worth of data and here is a chart that shows the number of riders signed in for the past 52 Saturdays, plus 4 bonus holiday rides. Hope it shows up for you in your browser.
All of the Saturday rides that dipped below 60 riders coincided with other major events: WMT, CGC, MCC, TdeT, TdeM and RFS. Except for a cold Christmas eve where 2 Santa's were counted in the 42 total riders. So it is accurate to say that we consistently attract between 60-100 riders every week. The summer months, even here in Phoenix, show a higher attendance than cooler seasons; though I can't imagine why. And not a single ride was canceled on account of weather.

85 Riders Kick off Labor Day Weekend with Ride to Cesar Chavez Park
Added September 2, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Happy Labor Day weekend! 85 riders kicked it off with a quick visit to Cesar Chavez Park. It was great to see a large turnout at the breakfast stop – we counted around 40 colorful cyclists, mostly occupying the patio. Election-year politics dominated the conversation at our table. I was relieved to hear only intelligent, civil discourse regardless of affiliation. If only all the masses were as informed, insightful and rational as we cyclists.
Good job remembering the September change in start time. Too bad there was no change in the weather to go with it. Still felt like August to me.
Coming up...
MONDAY 9/3/12 7:00am, NW corner of Signal Butte & Baseline. Tour de Usery
Ed Dumas has volunteered to lead our Labor Day Holiday Ride. Start point is at Paradise Bakery located at the NW corner of Signal Butte & Baseline, along the Signal Butte side of the parking lot. The 37+ mile long route goes up and over Usery Pass. On the 27 mile shorter version you bypass the pass, but both routes offer an optional 2 mile loop with more steep climbs. Breakfast afterwards at the Paradise Bakery start point.
Saturday 9/8/12 7:00am, Kiwanis Park.

After last weeks ride I received this note from a relatively new member that I'd like to share with all of you:
"I want to take a moment and tell you about the experience I had this morning and why cycling with this group is awesome. I experienced a flat approximately 4 miles into the ride and 4 people stopped to help me. They didn't know me, they just saw that I needed help and they gave it delaying their ride and their morning. That was awesome. This group is not afraid to stop and help others. I am proud to ride with this group. :-)"
Although Saturday Cycling is not advertised as a No-Drop ride, Janet and I strive to make sure that no one is left alone at the tail end of the ride, especially in the summer heat. It's always a relief to us when someone else has stopped to stay with a flat tire victim. Thank you all who pitch in to help ensure no cyclist is left behind.
Here is another testimonial I received from a first-time participant on that same ride:
"I am not sure how many were in ahead or behind us, but we found a group of about 8-10 riders that were going at a comfortable pace and we had a blast!! That McDowell hill near the Army base caused a little heavy breathing. We definitely want to be a part of your club."
I love PMBC.

Many New Faces on St.Francis Loop
Added August 26, 2012

Hello Saturday Cyclists,
95 riders signed in today for more hill climbing in August. Was great to see many new faces in the crowd, including our own son Sean who recently moved back from Tucson. Nevertheless, Janet and I spent a pleasant morning with old friend Dr. Mike after he decided to change 2 flat tires before even leaving the parking lot. We were glad to see no one along the route waiting to be swept up.
Coming up...
Saturday 9/1/12 7:00, Kiwanis Park. Peseo de Cesar Chavez
Note the time change for September! We'll start our Labor Day weekend with a visit to Cesar Chavez Park. The 34.5 mile long route takes you all the West way past 35th Ave going park-to-park from Kiwanis in Tempe to Cesar Chavez in Phoenix and back. The standard route turns back at 7th ave for a 25.5 mile loop. Both routes are mostly flat. Breakfast is at AZ Bread Co at Kyrene and Elliot.

What do you think about Lance? That was the question bouncing around the pack this morning, and one you may hear from your non-cycling friends who consider you an inside expert.
What do I think? Did he cheat? Was he a doper? Maybe. Probably. And I don't really care. He may be stripped of his honors and slammed by his critics like a Democrat at a tea party, but it wont diminish him in my eyes. Though impressive, I did not idolize him for his athletic achievements. There are apparently millions who have benefited from his cancer fighting heroics; I doubt they'll be easily disillusioned.
What I appreciate most about Lance is how he inspired countless Americans to embrace the sport of road cycling. Millions more people in the US now know there is a Tour de France. And road riding has enjoyed a miraculous resurgence after the coolness of mountain biking just about obliterated skinny-tire machines from the bike shops. I credit Lance for a lot of that new found popularity in this club's favorite pastime. I doubt we'll be seeing a mass exodus if the great motivator were to become discredited. I'll always be ready to applaud Lance Armstrong for his irrevocable contributions to cycling.

Wrap up of Mummy Mountain and Lucky 7s
Added August 19, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Treasurer Wendell reports that 84 riders showed up for last weeks Mummy Mountain ride where the temperature was 91 degrees at the 6:30am start time, and into triple digits by the finish. Janet and I picked a good week to escape to Flagstaff where the Saturday ride out Lake Mary road started at 8:00am when the temp was still below 70. Ahhh.
Today we had 79 riders sign in for the Lucky 7s route. Though the club has used this map 3 or 4 times, it is the first time I myself have ridden it, and I like it! Even though I was not lucky with the lights – I'd better stay away from the casinos today. And I'm not going to say a thing about the temperature for a change, however… that 59% relative humidity was sure the top topic at the breakfast stop.

Saturday 8/25/12 6:30, Kiwanis Park. St.Francis Loop
My personal favorite. Both the 25 mile or 36 mile loop options include three moderate climbs, taking you north through Papago Park, around the St. Francis Cemetery, and returning to Tempe via south Scottsdale. Breakfast after at Paradise Bakery at McClintock and Guadalupe.

Slathering Over the Ahwatukee Foothills

Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Welcome to August! 98 cyclists ushered in the Dog Days by slathering [Sueism] over the Ahwatukee Foothills. Counting those who missed the sign in, we probably topped 100 today. As far as I know, no one succumbed to the oppressive heat. Thanks for that, and take care again next Saturday with more summer hill climbs.
Correction from last week's report: I discovered that I had missed an entire sign-in sheet. The actual count of registered riders was 95 as opposed to the 83 I had reported. Better.

If you're feeling your culinary creativity, please submit your recipe directly to Carol.
One more note: Jane reports that she is making changes to the start time for the Scottsdale Kokopedalli on the first and third Sundays in August and September to 7 a.m. I suggest you consult the web site to get the straight dope on all the ride start times. Regroups, like the breakfast stop, are optional parts of each ride. (I suppose the entire route is optional in some sense). One thing I've learned is that if they occur much less than 10 miles into the ride, not very many people opt to stop. However… I'd like to point out that they aren't really there because we think you need a rest or it's already time for a pause au natural. The main purpose is to ‘regroup'. Traffic lights and flat tires can separate us from our favorite ridding buddies. The regroup gives everyone a chance to hook back on. Of course while you're stopped, you may as well enjoy a snack, refill your water, shed a layer, stretch your hamstrings or off-load that early morning coffee.
Nevertheless, we will make an attempt to move the regroups on a couple of rides so they land at a place where a break will be more welcomed.

Hello Saturday Cyclists,
66 is the number of cyclists who signed in to ride the Tour de Sue yesterday. It was hard to say if we were riding or swimming in all that humidity. Felt a little like being back in the Midwest for some of us.
Another great crowd showed up for a fun Tour de France viewing. The trivia games and raffle prizes were sometimes more entertaining than the race itself.

It has been reported down from the mountain that the White Mountain Tour did not get deluged as some of us feared, though there was a challenging cross wind on day one to keep it exciting. I've heard only positive reviews and kudos for the phantom organizers. If you have pictures to share, please submit them to our web master - see the web site below.
We were reminded of another maintenance tip this morning. If you ever have trouble getting in - or especially out - of your pedals, before going to buy replacements, take a look at the bottom of your shoe. Sometimes when you have a screw loose, it may be on you rather than the bike.

Rain on Tour de Mesa
Added July 15, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
45 riders signed in for Saturday cycling while many other members enjoyed the risky weather at the White Mountain Tour. We got just enough rain on the Tour de Mesa to ensure we and our bikes were all covered with road grime. It helps to have four hands at work for scrubbing down a tandem. It was a great day to get better acquainted with some of the newer members while the old guard was away, as we had a one-table intimate gathering at the breakfast stop.
If you showed up at Bleachers today for the Tour de France viewing, I hope you had a great time. However, the club gathering is on Sunday this week. Hope to see you then at 11:30.
Coming up...
Sunday, 7/15/12 11:30am Tour de France party at Bleacher's in Ahwatukee
This week the viewing party is on Sunday to catch the Limoux to Foix stage in the Pyrenees . Bob Beane and Linda Torres will be hosting (no, that does not mean they are buying your lunch).
Saturday, 7/21/12 6:30 Kiwanis Park. Tour de Sue
The Tour de Sue, in memory of that long blonde ponytail that led us for so many years, is a flat loop to the south, at the edge of civilization, where the traffic lights are few and far between. Route options are 25 or 35 miles and the breakfast stop is at AZ Bread Co in Tempe at Kyrene and Elliot.
Saturday, 7/21/12 Tour de France party at Bleacher's in Ahwatukee
This years final viewing party is stage 19, the Bonneval to Charters Individual TT. This one will likely decide the final winner. It is rumored that the Eiffel Tower itself will be among the door prizes awarded to the lucky attendees. Start time is TBD.
Saturday, 7/28/12 6:30 Kiwanis Park. McKellips Loop
We haven't ridden this route since February. The 28 mile or 37 mile loop from Kiwanis Park in Tempe will take you north through Tempe and then east through Mesa on McKellips Road before returning to Paradise Bakery for breakfast.

It inspired me to compose this verse (while riding home form work in 110 degrees) as a less preachy way of reminding us about the dangers of heat exhaustion. I figure this ride report is it's only chance of actually being published anywhere!
Summertime sports are a treat
But if you get dizzy or sick from the heat
You should stop having fun
And get out of the sun
Lest heat stroke becomes your defeat
Ride safe.

A Double Ride Report
Added July 8, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Another double ride report this week.
Julie (Jules) Moore led the Independence Day Holiday ride again this year. Here is her report from Wednesday:
Our Quest for Shade was answered as 78 riders rolled out under a total cloud cover which only lent a few sprinkles mid-route. Thought I heard a small group encountered more than they bargained for when they headed out after breakfast for some bonus miles. There were only a couple flats, and a broken chain combined with a flat that were quickly remedied with some good mechanical talents. We nearly packed Paradise Bakery for some nutritional replenishment before heading off in a multitude of directions to continue a fun holiday.
And for today, Saturday July 7th, 93 riders headed west towards Cesar Chavez Park in Phoenix for a mostly flat, wind-free romp in the heat. One broken chain, 1\2 mile from the finish was the only notable mishap. Thank you again everyone for keeping Saturday Cycling accident free!
The 7th stage of the Tour de France, the first mountain stage of this years tour, provided an exciting finish. Bleachers Sports Grill seems to like us more each time we visit. Two very attentive servers dedicated to our party kept the food and drinks flowing right in pace with the race action. Jim Siart also did a fine job of keeping us entertained during the commercial breaks. Still two more chances to join in the fun.
Coming up...
Saturday, 7/14/12 6:30 Kiwanis Park . Tour de Mesa
For those who do not escape to the White Mountain Tour, Saturday Cycling will ride The Tour de Mesa, taking you to the northeast, with route options of 29 miles with no climbing or 39 miles with a gentle climb. Breakfast is back at Paradise Bakery at Guadalupe & McClintock.
Sunday7/15/12 Tour de France party at Bleacher's in Ahwatukee
This week the viewing party is on Sunday to catch the Limoux to Foix stage in the Pyrenees . Start time is TBD. Bob Beane and Linda Torres will be hosting (no, that does not mean they are buying your lunch).
Saturday, 7/21/12 6:30 Kiwanis Park .
This year's final viewing party is stage 19, the Bonneval to Charters Individual TT. This one will likely decide the final winner. It is rumored that the Eiffel Tower itself will be among the door prizes awarded to the lucky attendees.

Have you noticed that the roads in many communities seem to be getting more bicycle friendly over the years? My commute route on Pecos in Chandler is the safest I've experienced since moving here in 1991. I give some of the credit to the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly America program. Scottsdale (Gold), Tempe (Silver), Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa (Bronze) have all participated in the effort to become recognized by the League as bicycle friendly.
LAB is also active in lobbying for our rites at the federal level and have developed and proliferated a curriculum of bicycle safety training. They are currently working on a potential unification of the League, Bikes Belong and the Alliance for Biking & Walking into one, powerful national organization. If you're not already a member, I would urge you to join this highly effective organization that is looking out for our interests nationwide. http://www.bikeleague.org/

St. Francis Loop in Scorching Heat
Added July 1, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
Here are 2 ride reports for the price of one!
Thanks to Scott Barvian for leading the Saturday June 23rd ride. I hear it was FLAST! This is his report:
94 riders signed in for the first ride of summer, and at least one more joined along the route. The updated Lucky-7 ride was remarkably drama-free and our friends at Az Bread Co. capped off another fine morning of Saturday Cycling.
And for today, Saturday June 30th, we had a respectable 86 riders take on the St. Francis Loop’s three fun climbs in the scorching heat. As far as I know everyone survived. A few opted for short-cuts back when they felt the heat and/or time spent changing flats had taken it out of them. I appreciate that they were smart enough to keep cool and stay safe.
The viewing party for the prologue stage of the Tour de France was also a good time. No official count, but it was clearly another social event with a great turnout.
Coming up...
Wednesday, July 4th 6:30 Kiwanis Park. Midsummer's Ride; A Quest for Shade
A special holiday edition of Saturday Cycling, led by Julie (Jules) Moore. Bring out your red white and blue and enjoy a clockwise loop through Chandler , Ahwatukee, Papago Park and Scottsdale. This route will be modified some due to the closing of the Mill Avenue bridge for fireworks preparation - apparently homeland security does not think bicycles, bridges and explosives mix well. 30 and 40 mile options with breakfast at Paradise Bakery at Guadalupe & McClintock.
Saturday, 7/7/12 6:30 Kiwanis Park. Peseo de Cesar Chavez
Our furthest foray to the west, the 34.5 mile long route takes you all the way past 35th ave going park-to-park from Kiwanis in Tempe to Cesar Chavez in Phoenix and back. The standard route turns back at 7th ave for a 25.5 mile loop. Both routes are mostly flat. Breakfast is at AZ bread Co at Kyrene and Elliot.
Saturday 7/7/12 Tour de France party at Bleacher's in Ahwatukee
Start time is TBD for the Tomblaine to La Planche des Belles Filles stage. Just short of 200 Km with a Cat 3, 3, 1 uphill finish.
Saturday, 7/14/12 6:30 Kiwanis Park.
Sunday 7/15/12 Tour de France party at Bleacher's in Ahwatukee
This week the viewing party is on Sunday to catch the Limoux to Foix stage in the Pyrenees. Start time is TBD. Bob Beane and Linda Torres will be hosting (no, that does not mean they are buying your lunch).

Another of PMBC's fabulous fully supported rides is coming up very soon. The 2-day White Mountain Tour is July 14-15 this year. Always a popular way for cyclists to enjoy what they do best away from the summer heat of home. If you've never ridden this event, which has been on-going for over 20 years, you should really give it a try. If you have ridden it before... well then you're probably already planning to be there. Please register soon so the crew of volunteers will have a reasonably accurate head-count expectation. All the details are here.

84 Cyclists Ride Length of Lindsay to Breakfast Meeting
Added June 17, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
84 cyclists signed in for today’s ride to the southeast. 103 showed up for the free breakfast at Jason's deli; most even stayed for the quarterly membership meeting. We had at least 5 new members join today. I met three of them at the start of the ride and all 3 came to the meeting, joined the club, and claimed to have had a very fun time. Thank you to everyone for helping make the new kids feel welcome!
Coming up...
Saturday 6/23/12 6:30 Kiwanis Park. Lucky 7's
Scott Barvian has volunteered to lead this week's ride with a new and improved version the Lucky 7's route he created about a year ago. This route starts at Kiwanis Park in Tempe , loops clockwise to the south and takes advantage of some of the new roads over by the Wild Horse Pass casino/resort area. The name plays off the mileage options of 27 or 37 miles and the two casinos along the way. Breakfast is at AZ bread Co at Kyerene and Elliot.
Saturday 6/30/12 6:30 Kiwanis Park. St. Francis Loop
My personal favorite. Both the 25 mile or 36 mile loop options include three moderate climbs, taking you north through Papago Park, around the St. Francis Cemetery, and returning to Tempe via south Scottsdale.
Saturday 6/30/12 Tour de France party at Bleacher's in Ahwatukee
That's right, it's already time for our annual 5 week tour of sports bars. Terrific Tina is making arrangements for the 2012 TdeF viewing parties, starting whenever the broadcast gets scheduled around lunch time on June 30. Watch for more information regarding dates, locations and start times coming soon.

For those of you who missed the membership meeting, allow me to recap the changes that were announced:
- Sue McFadden, after 20 years of leading Saturday Cycling, has stepped down from that role to ride the pack as an ordinary member. Thanks again Sue!
- Ken St. John (me) is the lucky one to inherit the Saturday Cycling franchise that Sue created and built to it’s current state of glory.
- I (Ken St. John) was unwilling to be both the president and a weekly ride leader. The board felt leading Saturday Cycling was either more important or more difficult to find someone willing to do, so I have resigned the presidency effective as of this morning’s meeting.
- Ron Waller was appointed by the board to serve as president for the remainder of the year. Ron, great guy that he is, accepted.
- Lastly, to replace Ron Waller as ad-hoc board member, the board appointed me, Ken St. John.
Bottom line: the board membership remains the same with Ron and Ken swapping places, and Saturday Cycling lives on.

72 Riders Enjoy Hills of South Mountain's South Side
Added June 10, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
It was an exceptionally gorgeous June day for riding! 72 riders signed in to enjoy the hills at the foot of South Mountain's south side. This is a very customize-able route that allows for ample opportunities to declare yourself done climbing and head on back. You had to look hard to spot our former ride leader as she successfully blended into the pack in her new role as regular member. Nicely done transition Sue; we're happy to have you along for the ride.

Saturday 6/16/12 6:30 Kiwanis Park. Length of Lindsay. Time for another Quarterly Membership Meeting! As always, that means free breakfast for club members. You can get there by joining us for the Length of Lindsay route - options of 27 miles or 39 miles, no climbing - or be at Jason's around 8:30. The meeting will commence around 9:30 when the last of the long route riders arrive.

Our friends at Performance Bicycle are hosting another PMBC night Sunday June 10th from 6-8pm. In the past this has included complimentary snacks, raffle prizes, giveaways, and discount "happy hour" pricing on their entire inventory exclusively for PMBC members. Last time the tavern next door contributed hot wings, chips and salsa. You'll have to be there to see what surprises are in store this time. If you have not yet become a member of PMBC, this would be a great time to join!
And one more reminder about the quarterly membership meeting next Saturday at Jason's Deli. Hope to see you all there.

Chivalry Lives on MidSummer Ride
Added June 3, 2012
written by Ken St. John
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
63 riders signed in for a warm early summer edition of the MidSummer Ride. Today PMBC proved that chivalry lives! Two of the ladies in the pack had blow outs that could not be repaired with a simple tube change. One kind gentleman provided a new tire for the lady in distress, and the second hero used a piece of cardboard to boot the damaged tire. All were able to continue through and finish the ride. Best of all, the ride leader hardly had to get his hands dirty.
Coming up...
Saturday 6/9/12 6:30am Kiwanis Park. The FootHills Training Ride takes you on a loop through the Ahwatukee Foothills with options of 25 miles with one gentle climb, or 38 miles that will take you up 5 more climbs. If you can follow the spaghetti-bowl long-route map, you will have gone up and down all 5 approaches with no repeats and no U-turns. Breakfast stop at the AZ Bread Co.
Saturday 6/16/12 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Time for another Quarterly Membership Meeting! As always, that means free breakfast for club members. This time at Jason's Deli in Chandler, on Fry Road just South of the Chandler Mall. You can get there by joining us for the Length of Lindsay route - options of 27 miles or 39 miles, no climbing - or be at Jason's around 8:30. The meeting will commence around 9:00 when the long route riders arrive.
Tid bits
When you flat out on the road and discover that there is a slash in your tire that cannot contain the tube, there is an emergency repair known as the tire boot. All you need is a thin, pliable, piece of fibrous material, such as a folded dollar bill or small strip of cardboard. You place the boot material inside the tire at the point of the slash, with sufficient overlap. Then carefully install the new tube so that the boot stays in place. Pump it up just enough to be rideable; the maximum PSI for your tire no longer applies. Then it would be best to take the shortest route to your destination, or nearest bike shop, retrieve that paper money from the damaged tire and apply towards a new one. It may be a kludge, but sure beats walking home.

97 Riders on Memorial Day Weekend Mummy Mountain Ride
Added May 27, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
We had 97 riders roll into the park on a cool breeze this morning for our last romp of the spring season. That little nudging breeze kicked as the adventure progressed, becoming either being friend or foe depending on which direction we were headed. When's the last time it was cool enough for breakfasting on the patio on Memorial Day weekend?
Coming up...
Monday 5/28/12 7:00am Memorial Day Ride. If you have the day off, come join us for a romp around the southeast valley. Start/finish is at the southwest corner of Queen Creek Rd and Alma School Road in Chandler. We'll be doing a loop to the southeast that we tried last Labor Day, with options of 24 miles or 40 miles, no climbing. Breakfast afterwards at either Paradise or Starbucks, back at the start/finish location. Contact is Scott Barvian.
Saturday 6/2/12 6:30am Kiwanis Park. Note the change to summer hours! Designed to be pedaled at the peak of the summer, the MidSummer Ride aka Quest For Shade is a loop around town that takes advantage of the shady side of things. Route options 28 miles with one climb or 38 miles with a couple of bonus climbs. Breakfast is at the northwest corner of Baseline and Rural, at the cafe seating in the Whole Foods store.
Tid bits
After 20 years of telling cyclists where to go on Saturday mornings, your intrepid ride reporter is rolling off the front and letting somebody else lead the pack. What started as a handful of friends heading out for a pedal and breakfast on Saturday mornings has grown over the years to a 400+ member bike club. Your job now is to remember what you've learned, which is that cycling and life in general are intertwined. You can't separate one from the other. Honor who ever steps up to the dicey job of leading the herd. Respect your body, respect your community. Work together when things get tough, laugh together when ever possible.
The ride never ends, grasshoppers.

Hi All!
We had 73 riders head south for our loop out onto open roads this morning. Some didn't get too far in that direction before turning back to the park to then head in the other direction, to downtown Phoenix in support of the Ride of Honor gathering of cyclists. By the the end of either ride, all were in agreement that summer is upon us.
Coming up...
Saturday 5/26/12 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Club jersey day! Fly your PMBC club colors, any edition of our jersey will do, and join us for a roll around the pack's favorite route, Mummy Mountain. Route options of 31 miles with a couple of climbs or 40 miles with a few more climbs. Breakfast at Paradise, southeast of McClintock & Guadalupe.

Cars are bigger than us, and they will always, always win a one on one throw down with us. We donate our money, we push through new laws, we protest... both silent and loudly. We attend summits and send people not only to our local capitol but all the way to the nation's capitol. We make public service announcements, trying to educate auto drivers and cyclists. And every year, more names are added to the list, cyclists run down while doing what they love. As with most complex issues, there isn't one solution, one answer, that will fix what is wrong. The important thing is to do something. Support the coalition, they are our voice and our hammer. Volunteer at events such as the Ride of Silence held this past week or the Ride of Honor today. Offer to be a ride leader for one of our club rides, the teaching that goes on in the real world setting of our weekly romps ripples out into the daily cycling lives of our riders and our community. We are united in our goal, and we have a lot of route options available to get there.

As the Weather Heats Up the Pack Expands
Added May 13, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
Holding with tradition, as the weather heats up, the pack expands. We had 95 cyclists turn out for our romp around town this morning. The standard route riders did themselves proud, conquering the three climbs and getting part way back in before the slathering dogs in the lead group whoshed by. Rolling by the Hayden Flour Mill gave us a great view of the newly opened public lawn space there, kinda nice to see some grass in downtown. (Uh, that would be the kind you have to mow, as opposed to the college student version that has been prolific in downtown since the '60s!) The area around the Mill now looks cool, man, can you dig it?
Coming up...
Saturday 5/19/12 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Don your red, white and blue in celebration of Armed Forces Day and join us for a romp to the south on the Tour de Sue. Route options of 28 miles or 36 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast of Elliot & Kyrene.
Saturday 5/19/12 8:30am Ride to the Ride of Honor, Kiwanis Park. For those members asking about the Ride of Honor gathering of cyclists in downtown Phoenix, if you would like to roll there with other PMBCer's, Jan has offered to lead a group over. She'll be leaving Kiwanis Park at 8:30am on a 15 mile route to the state capitol complex, arriving there for the 10:00am meet up for the gathering. If any questions, contact Jan Peterson.

Speaking of rebeling against authority, why do we have "so many dang rules" on Saturday mornings? On the flip side of the map each week apppears PMBC's list of safe riding guidelines, about a dozen or so are there. If you've pedaled with other cycling groups, we're somewhere in the middle realm of what we ask of our riders. We expect you to have a helmet on, and buckled anytime you're in motion on your bike. That is so when you bobble your pedals and fall over in the parking lot, you don't get a life ending head injury before the ride even starts. Keep one hand on the bars if there are other riders behind you. Yes, it impresses the newbies when you sit up with no hands just like the pro-riders, but when you fall they will also leave impressive tire tracks on your back. Though some of the cities we pedal thru allow one ear bud, PMBC requests no headsets, earphones, or ear buds. This isn't spin class, it's the real world with things like cars coming at you, cyclists passing you on the wrong side, and people trying to flirt with you. How can you hear all of that with one ear plugged?

70 Riders Roll Out to a Gentle Headwind on Tour de Mesa

Hi All!
We had 70 riders roll out to the east this morning, into a gentle head wind. The pack rather rapidly spread out into numerous groupings, each settling into a line behind the widest shoulders within reach. As things go, by the time we were rolling back in down Extension, the wind had shifted to being out of the south, keeping the calorie burn up for everybody. Perfect patio weather filled every seat outside Paradise. Has anybody else noticed how nice the staff is there? Great to have our appetites and our dollars welcomed!

Tid bits
Our tid bit this week is a message to you from PMBC's club president, Ken St. John:
Hello Saturday Cyclists,
As many of you already know, Sue McFadden, the long-time leader of PMBC's flagship weekly event, Saturday Cycling, has given notice that this will be her last month in that role.
First: Thank you Sue, for the magnificent job you've done in making Saturday Cycling a consistently great ride. You have been an inspiration to me and many others.
The second purpose for this missive to assure all of you that the board is committed to continuing Saturday Cycling indefinitely with a seamless transition of leadership, starting with the first ride in June, where you will see my name and number in place of Sue's on the ride map.
If you are interested in volunteering to help with the many elements of ride leadership that Sue has fulfilled, please email me: Ken St. John. We would be happy to spread the honor and duty of ride leadership among many. Thanks again Sue, and to all the participants that make Saturday morning rides so much fun.

Foothills Training Ride
Added April 29, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
We had 71 riders appear for our romp to the hills this morning. Before we could do that though, we had to get out of the park through a flow of people and cars gathering for the Girls On The Run event. (And we thought soccer parents drove badly??) Seeing that many young ladies spending their Saturday morning going for a run gives us hope for that generation. The rest of us upper generations managed to get ourselves out of the park and over to Ahwatukee for numerous versions of the suggested route.
Coming up...
Saturday 5/5/12 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The Tour de Mesa takes us to the northeast, with route options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Paradise, southeast of McClintock & Guadalupe.
Saturday 5/12/12 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The St. Francis Loop takes us on a figure 8 loop up thru town, with route options of 26 miles or 36 miles, both with moderate climbing. Breakfast at Paradise, southeast of Guadalupe and McClintock.
Saturday 5/19/12 Ride of Honor. We have members asking for details about the Ride of Honor that will be held on this date, which is being hosted by the Not One More Foundation and the Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists. Though not a PMBC event, as soon as details about the ride are available we'll have them up on the website. The general concept will be cyclists from all over the valley riding to the capitol in downtown Phoenix for a gathering at 10:00am. Attendance at the Honor Ride would most definitely be an excused absence from SatCycling.
Tid bits
The piles of yellow palo verde blossoms here and there along the route this morning is another heads up telling us the heat is coming. Do you remember the drill? Summer riding takes pre-planning. Start hydrating as soon as you wake up and eat something before you get to the park. Tuck a snackie (or goo or whatever your calorie of choice is) in your pocket for mid-ride. Keep the sun off your arms to help keep your body temp down, with either spiffy arm coolers (pull on sleeves that protect you from the sun) or by slathering on sunscreen. Drink frequently during the romp, every 15 minutes or so. In the cycling world, being known as a heavy drinker is a compliment.
Ride safe.

Hi All!
Even the threat of summer temps didn't keep 76 riders from taking on the South Mountain route this morning. The lop-sided jacaranda tree in the parking lot covered with it's purple cape and the saguaros seen blossoming along the route were a hint that the heat is here to stay. So much for spring! Some of the group took on the warm climb up to the towers, but others heard the call of cold drinks and cool seating at the breakfast stop and turned back at the StoneHouse.
Coming up...
Saturday 4/28/12 7:00am Kiwanis Park. The Foothills Training Ride offers options of 25 miles with a bit of gentle climbing or 38 miles with moderate climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast of Kyrene & Elliot.

Our club clothing wrangler Bob Turner advises our summer bulk order has arrived, so if you've been coveting any bits of club stuff, your time has arrived. Head to the website to print off an order form, or email Bob Turner direct to ask about specific items or to make arrangements to meet up with him to take delivery.
The closer we're jammed together in life, be it in a house, a community or a bike pack, the more important common courtesy becomes. Small actions, both positive and negative, work their way out through the group like ripples in a pond. This morning we had a rider commit what is probably the most disliked faux pas known to riders around the world, when he let loose a snot rocket over his shoulder without first looking to see if there was anyone behind him. Grasshoppers, this might seem apparent, but freeing the contents of your nose to the universe is something you do only when you are the last rider in the line... never ever with other riders behind you. On a breezy day, your now free-range mucus travels a long ways, and no one wants to arrive at breakfast with your DNA splatted down the front of them.
Ride safe.

A Small Crowd of 19 for Tour de Lehi
Added April 15, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
Thanks to Prez Ken for stepping up to lead what was left of the home team this morning, which consisted of 19 people signed in. The combined draw of the Tour de Mesa, the MS150, tax weekend and iffy weather made for a small crowd. There wasn't any breakfast conversation to report, because no one went to breakfast. This is potentially a violation of our club's prime directive, which is "We ride to eat!".
Coming up...
Saturday 4/21/12 7:00am Kiwanis Park. We're off to South Mountain, with route options of 24 miles with a bit of gentle climbing, 38 miles with moderate climbing, or 39 miles with lots of climbing. Breakfast at AZ Bread, southeast of Elliot & Kyrene.

This Wednesday, April 18th, is Bike To Work Day. If you're in the Tempe area that morning, from 6:30am to 8:00am, there are numerous spots offering free snackies and tshirts (if you get there early). See the city's website ( www.tempe.gov/tim ) for a list of all the hosting locations. If you want to pedal to work one last time with Mayor Hugh, he'll be at Whole Foods (northwest of Baseline & Rural) at 7:00am. If you don't normally pedal to work, this is the day. And if you aren't working, that just leaves more time to pedal, now doesn't it?

Mummy Mountain Route Becomes Tour de Detour
Added April 8, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
We had 88 riders appear for our Mummy Mtn romp this morning, which we need to rename the Tour de Detour. (Makes for a rather cool route name, huh?) We didn't get too far from the park before being sent off course due to Hardy being closed. From that point on the mapped route became a loose suggestion, with everybody seeking their own path. Most found their way back to Paradise eventually, where the caffeine and laughs flowed freely. Such perfect patio weather.
Coming up...
Saturday 4/14/12 7:00am Kiwanis Park. We'll be headed to the quiet streets of the Tour de Lehi, with route options of 27 miles or 35 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at USEgg (or SomeBurro's if they're open by the time we arrive), southwest of College & Baseline.

Out of our 80 some cyclists this morning, about a dozen were not members of PMBC. Not a problem, SatCycling has always embraced the more the merrier concept, and anybody is welcome to roll with us. But if you've hung out in the herd a few times, and think you've found your people, membership would be a good choice. At $15 a year, it's a great buy for no other reason than the 4 free breakfasts a year, but we're nudging people in the direction of joining for insurance reasons. First time guests have coverage, but after that first visit there is potential for there to be no coverage if you haven't joined the flock officially. Have you been to an ER lately? You definitely don't want to go there unless somebody else is picking up the tab. Head to the website, join the club. We'll take anybody, which is obvious if you look around on a Saturday morning.

Sixty-one Riders on Length of Lindsay Loop
Added April 1, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
Thanks to Armando for leading the home team of 61 riders this morning. They made their way down Lindsay, and then on the way back in discovered city of Chandler tax dollars at work (road construction).
Our members that pedaled in the City of Chandler's Century Ride this morning found the city did an awesome job on their first large cycling event. Guess it didn't hurt that a number of the people who were involved in the planning of that event are members of our club!
Coming up...
Saturday 4/7/12 7:00am Kiwanis Park. Note the start time change! We continue our roll thru the spring with a journey to Mummy Mountain, options of 31 miles with a couple of climbs or 40 miles with additional climbing. Breakfast at Paradise, southeast of Guadalupe and McClintock.

Chandler put time, money and effort into making this morning's Century Ride happen. In addition to showing people areas that are great for recreational pedaling, such as the canal path, they made another more subtle point. All of those hundreds of people transported themselves all the way around the city on bikes. So, maybe the next time some of those people need to go one mile to the post office, they might hop on a bike? Or instead of driving 5 miles to their office, they might pedal? Bicycles are an excellent mode of transportation. Great for your body, your state of mind, and the environment. Bike to Work Day is coming up in a couple of weeks, but every day is bike to where ever day.

Tour de Sue Rolls Out Into Perfect Cycling Weather
Added March 26, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
The siren call of the Safety Ride reduced the home team to 51 riders this morning, but we rolled out into perfect cycling weather. The west bound sections of the route picked up a gentle tailwind, kicking up the pace even with many of the lead dogs not there. Patio seating at breakfast was popular, with the conversation swirling around the latest in artificial joints (we're aging like fine wine) to plans for epic summer travels. (Aging leads to retirement, which leads to the open road!)
Coming up...
Saturday 3/31/12 7:30am Kiwanis Park. The Length of Lindsay loop takes us to the southeast, with options of 29 miles or 39 miles, no climbing. Breakfast at Paradise, southeast of McClintock and Guadalupe.

We do seem to have a reasonably high ratio of beat up bodies in the pack. Add to that a good number of diabetics and those with heart conditions, and it might seem that cycling is hard on your physical well being. The opposite of that is actually the case. We draw people in who have worn themselves down with high impact sports earlier in life, and who have spent a lot of time putting the wrong fuel in their bodies and expecting good results. Cycling is low impact (if you keep the rubber side down) and the long steady calorie burn of a lengthy ride can keep you on the path of your body working as it was designed to. We ride to eat, eat to live, live to ride. Stay with that, and everything else will be fine.

St. Paddy's Day
Added March 18, 2012

Hi All!
The temptation of free food this morning brought us 93 riders, with more joining in the closer we got to the restaurant. Interesting mix of club kits versus nods to St. Paddy's Day in the crowd, with best dressed going to Bob Litchfield, who rode in a green kilt. (Yes, kilts are Scottish, but he had all the Irish eyes smilin', so was all good.) If you missed attending the meeting, check the website and newsletter for upcoming events and we'll let you know later what we volunteered you for.

RSVP to Tina Miller. Yes, we do spend a lot of time eating. Isn't that why we ride our bikes??

45 Riders Spread Out Along the Foothills Training Ride Route
Added March 11, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
The temptation of the Mining Country Century this morning reduced the home team to 45 riders for our romp to the Foothills. We made up for lack of numbers by spreading out along the route, in all different directions. Everybody was so impressed by how well they were riding on the way out, until they had to turn back into the wind that had been assisting them outbound.
MCC leader Charlie reported in that they pulled in 126 souls (approximately 252 soles) with a new lunch caterer this year doing an awesome job. All riders received a fortune cookie, which most were hoping would read something like "The rest of your day will be carried along by tailwinds." Never trust a fortune cookie.
Coming up...

Not too long ago the call went out for a bike donation needed for a young lady. As seems to be our way, that call was answered, thoroughly and completely. Some feedback on the results, here is a note from Mike Litecky:
"A few weeks back I requested help in locating a bicycle for a young woman attending school in the district where my wife works. I want to thank those willing to donate their bicycles for the cause. A big thank you goes out to Nancy Kirk, whose mountain bike I accepted. I also want to thank Bill at Adventure Bicycle in Mesa for a pair of more road worthy tires. And a big shout out to Rick at Javelina Cycles for his donation of a pair of new pedals and a set of lights. I picked up a helmet and a new lock to round things out. On Wednesday March 7th my wife delivered the bike to a absolutely speechless young woman. And what perfect timing. She had gotten a ride to school but had no idea on how she was getting home afterward.
What can I say but thanks again to all who made this possible. The bicycling community really is something special."

Dodging Walkers and Road Construction on Mummy Mountain Route
Added March 4, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
We had 69 riders manage to dodge the Make a Wish walkers this morning at the park, though we could have used the body heat of an extra couple of hundred people. Twas a bit chilly for our first 7:30am start of the year. The romp around Mummy included a detour away from the epic Hummingbird climb, due to some not so epic road construction that will be going on there for the next three months or so. On the return romp riders started drifting off the pack, with some going to see if the Great AZ Beer Fest was open yet, and the breakfasters all selecting their favorite food stop. The grouchy staff at Einy's has apparently finally worked it's magic on our group, with all snubbing that spot.

Hey you, the rider that waits till the day of to register for bike rides... have you checked out the 10 day weather forecast for the town of Superior? That would be where you would be headed next Saturday morning if you're doing the Mining Country Century. Low 55, high 75. In the world of MCC, that is just about perfection, not too cold at the start, not too hot on the climbs. Ride leader (and Thug) Charlie Davis says he'll be grumpy about it, but he'll still let you roll with the group if you procrastinated and didn't send in pre-registration, just bring a few bucks for the late fee. If you've never checked out this annual adventure the club hosts, see Mining Country Challenge.

Perfect Spring Weather Brings 73 Riders Out For Tour de Mesa
Added February 26, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
The perfect spring weather this morning brought us 73 riders for our romp over to Mesa. Broken glass along Guadalupe on the out bound worked its evil magic and the pack was soon spread out by several flat tire pit stops. The roll back in thru downtown Mesa was great, with the winter visitor art sculptures still out on display. By the time we reached breakfast, it was perfect for patio'ing.

(Note to the long route riders, due to construction on Cheney and Hummingbird, we will be by-passing the Hummingbird climb by way of Invergordon and Mockingbird.)

The spring cycling event season is upon us, with the weekends filled with races and charity rides. The entry fee for some of those can be a bit daunting, but if you want to save a few bucks on the PBAA's Tour de Mesa (April 14th) we now have an "in", with PMBC member Wayne Churchman being on the PBAA staff. The Tour de Mesa is offering a "team" discount this year. The idea is you gather together at least 10 friends, elect a captain as your point person, and register for the event as a team at a reduced entry fee cost. If you would like more info on how to do that, contact Wayne Churchman.

Runners and Drag Races on Tour de Sue
Added February 19, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
Our parking lot was over run with runners this morning, participating in Susan's Run (excellent event name!). We had 68 riders manage to find sign-in and get themselves assembled to roll out. The romp around the route brought us smack into the traffic jam of cars trying to get to Firebird for the drag races, but bikes were allowed where no cars could go, so we managed to slip through the masses and continue along our merry way. The morning chill left plenty of patio seating for our herd when we rolled into the breakfast stop.
Coming up...
Monday 2/20/12 8:00am Desert Breeze Park. A spur of the moment holiday romp. Spin Cycle invites all levels to join them in a ride to the southeast out toward Gateway Airport and back. Mileage is as many as your legs want to do. Breakfast at Paradise, southeast of Price & Ray.

Hi All!
First, a thanks to spur of the moment ride leader for last Saturday, Neal Thomas. His post ride notes...
"We had 65 riders sign in on time with who knows how many showing up after the delayed 8:00 AM start as the time of the start begins to creep back to earlier times. As usual, we had cyclists all over our famed South Mountain for a very nice day of riding."
This morning we had 67 riders assemble in the parking lot, managing to get under way just before being squashed between the S.O.S. Walk and the Walk For Jeremyah. The pack set a quick pace up through Tempe, dodging the street closurers for the Skirt Chasers run later in the morning. Apparently everybody in town thought today was a perfect day to be out and about! The post ride munching was spread out, with some landing at the Family Cafe and others rolling on to Einy's or Paradise. Any coffee pot will do when in need of a fix.

The City of Chandler has the details up and registration open now for the Chandler Century Ride to be held on Saturday March 31st. They are having a free 7 mile family ride and then either a 39 mile or 65 mile route for $35. Complete details can be found at: www.chandleraz.gov/centuryride. This is Chandler's first attempt at a large organized ride, and you are excused from SatCycling if you would like to go check it out that morning!
And last, Mike Litecky is looking for a bike donation for a young special needs girl who rides her bike about 13 miles each way from her home to the school that she attends. Her bike is in bad shape, making her school commute a struggle. Does anyone have something usable like a mountain bike or a commuter worthy steed they don't need? She is about 5'3". If the bike needs some work, that's okay, Mike's offering to give it an overhaul. If you've got a bike that could be donanted, contact Mike Litecky.

80 Riders Criss-cross the Town on St. Francis Loop
Added January 29, 2012

Hi All!
A breeze already picking up before sunrise didn't discourage 80 riders from their quest to criss-cross the town in our favorite figure eight loop this morning. Depending on their timing of coming back across (or trying to come back across) the Mill bridge over the lake, they were treated to the odd sight of the Color Run taking place. Not sure who thunk that event up, or what the funds were being raised for, but watching oodles of runners being sprayed with various colored paints as they traversed the course was rather entertaining, as long as you weren't down wind!

Javelina Cycles put on a heck of an opening party, though some riders were disappointed when told they couldn't wear their cleated shoes in the Sponge Bob Bounce House. Lots of slick bike gear to look at, great munchies, and rubbing elbows with lots of bike-minded people... perfect end to the romp.

It's a miracle! After many years of dodging wheel-eating pot-holes, while also trying to keep a look out for cyclist-eating stray dogs, the road surface on the Guadalupe bridge over I-10 has been re-finished. (Doesn't stop the dogs, but at least you can ride faster now to try and dodge them!) And how did that miracle come to be? Only the pencil pushers deep inside some streets office know for sure, but we have to consider that it was partially brought about by so many cyclists mentioning that section needing a fix any time anybody asked our opinion about needed projects. And telling them even when they didn't ask our opinion. And telling them even when they told us it would be a long time in the future. If you see a problem on a street, speak up. Find out who is responsible for the street, ask for a fix, be vocal, and be persistent. The motorists don't think so, but we cyclists pay taxes too, and have a say in how those dollars are spent. Now, if we could just come up with a good plan to get all of the dogs in Guadalupe "fixed", what a lovely stretch of road that would be!

North to Mummy Mountain
Added January 15, 2012
written by Sue McFadden
Hi All!
First, special thanks to Fletcher, our Sunday morning ride leader, who was silly enough to answer his phone pre-sunrise last Saturday morning and agree to spur of the moment leadership of the Saturday flock. His post ride notes were...
"We had 72 riders take off and 73 returned, don't ask me how that happened. Everything went very smoothly, with Lenore making sure she cleaned the road for everyone, refilling both tires at separate points in the ride. Breakfast was entertaining as usual, with a plethora of tandems at the ride. A total of 6 the ride leader noticed."
This morning we had 71 riders appear for our romp up to Mummy Mountain. The herd made it about 3 miles into the adventure before Roger's seat (his bike seat, not HIS seat) departed from it's designated spot. Being the MacGyver of Cycling, a pit stop at Ace Hardware soon had him back on the road chasing the pack down.
Coming up...
Saturday 1/28/12 8:30am Kiwanis Park. The St. Francis Loop takes us on a figure eight route up thru town, with options of 26 miles or 36 miles, both with moderate climbing. Breakfast is at NCounter, southwest corner of Mill & 3rd.

Last summer a half dozen or so of our club members took their road cycling really out onto the road, with a self-supported ride across the northern tier of the USA. They had such a grand time that some of them are plotting to do it again, and they want anybody else with the same spirit of adventure to join in. (Typical disclaimer to insert here, this is a personal invite from the group that is going, this ride is NOT a PMBC backed event.) Tentative plan is to start in Astoria OR around June 1st and head east. For more complete details, Randy Garmon is acting as the contact person for the adventure. Wonder how many stops at Ace Hardware they'll make?
Ride safe.

A "Penance" Ride
Added January 8, 2012

After last night's rain, the weather cleared and the streets dried. Later in the day, I decided to go out on a bike ride - a "penance" ride. You see, having been raised as a catholic, I know all about guilt and punishment, and I sorely needed some hard work after days of sitting around with no exercise and eating all manner of sweets and other goodies. So I chose to embark on a roughly 30 mile ride with some hills thrown in to atone for my gluttony...
After leaving Sun City I rode southwest on Williams drive towards the local HEB grocery store and turned right on DB Wood, which would take me out towards Georgetown Lake. There's a fast downhill, followed by an equally steep uphill climb to highway 29. Turning west on highway 29, it's pretty much steady climbing as I made my way to Ronald Reagan Expressway, a popular road for bicyclists. As I approached the intersection, I saw a cyclist going northbound on Ronald Reagan. "Oh boy", I thought - I might be able to catch this guy and we can ride together.
I was some distance behind the other guy, and then for some reason he stopped. One glance at his physique, and I pegged him as a casual rider. He had a considerable amount of pudge around his middle, and thick legs. He got back on his bike just as I rode past. I was going at a moderate pace, thinking he would catch up to me and we could ride together. Sure enough, he caught up with me but without a word, he went right on by. "Okay", I thought, I'll catch up to him, which I did, but he spotted my shadow and he immediately picked up the pace in an obvious attempt to drop me.
So, the glove had been dropped, and I would not fail to answer the challenge. I increased my speed and caught up with him, but again, after spying my shadow, he took it up another notch. We're on a slight incline, going into a light headwind, and our speed is increasing - 18.3 mph, 18.7 mph, 19.0 mph. all this time, I'm wondering if his stamina can match his ego, and he's probably wondering when I'm going to blow up. I'm wearing my Sun City Club jersey, so he knows I'm an old fart; he's wearing a green and yellow jersey from Ireland - no clue as to his age, but it's a safe bet he's younger than me. Will age win out over pudge? We'll see...
We continue on. I'm at around 90% effort; I've got to hold back some in order to get home. Then, my heart rate monitor starts beeping; the alarm is warning me that I'm outside my aerobic zone, meaning that my exertions have reached the point where I'm eating into my glycogen stores. In about 10 or 15 minutes, I will have exhausted my glycogen and the lactic acid buildup in my legs will force me to back off. In my mind, I can hear Scotty telling Captain Kirk, as the Enterprise is being sucked towards a black hole, "I'm giving her all she's got captain!". But my brain is saying, "Scotty, I need more power dammit!"
I'm behind and slightly to the left of the pudgy leprechaun who shows no sign of cracking. He can probably hear my heart rate monitor's beeps, so he must know I'm at my limit. Still, I hang on, refusing to back off. We crest the hill and descend down the other side. But our exertions don't let up. I'm down on the drops, trying to maintain as much of an aerodynamic position I can. But I've got to ease up enough to get my heart rate back down below the top end of my training zone. As I do, the other guy starts pulling away slowly. Encouraged at seeing a slight gap, he pushes harder.
We approach another short hill. "Okay, screw it - you win!", I think. I shut down the afterburners and let my heart recover as I see the guy pull away. I don't know what, if any damage I inflicted on him, so I renew the chase once again. Thinking that he too might have overdone it and he might back off to recover; who knows? I might catch him again. But it doesn't work out that way. I'm able to close ground on the short climbs, but he pulls away, all the while glancing back to see where I am, on the downward pitches. He continues to pull further away and again, I give up.
I finally reach Williams Drive and turn right, towards Sun City. The leprechaun is nowhere in sight. I don't know which way he turned, but he obviously knows I'm going back to Sun City. There's a short steep hill up the road, and once again I kick in the jets, hoping that if he’s ahead, I might catch sight of him on the hill. As I approach the bottom, I see a cyclist approaching in the other direction on the other side of the road - it's the leprechaun! My, what a gut he's got! How on earth did he drop me??? We pass each other exchanging glances..
I start up the hill, standing out of the saddle for most of the climb. After the hill, I increrase my speed, 18, 19, 23, 27 mph, maxing out at 30 as I approach the entrance to Sun City. Despite the exertions I still feel okay. That is, until I hit the last rise on Sun City Blvd before turning onto Cool Springs... My back aches and my legs feel heavy. Still, I manage a decent high speed turn onto Cool Springs and sprint up the hill. But I have to downshift just before cresting. I make it home in 2hr, 04 min, riding a total of 35.4 miles. In the process I burned almost 1600 calories. But clearly I'm out of shape, and my ego is bruised. Sometimes you're the bat and sometimes your the ball; today was my turn to get whacked...
