Saturday Cycling Ride Report for 02/06/2021

Hello Saturday Cyclists,

Twenty-nine was the count for Saturday’s flat ride to northeast.  The weeds I’m seeing sprout up in the yard have convinced me that we have passed the coldest morning temps for this winter season and we should be able to slough off some layers in the weeks to come.  I also seeded the vegetable garden this week because I’m that confident.

President Bob will be observing President’s Day this year by putting on his ride-leader hat to host one of our traditional Monday Holiday rides next week.  This would be a good time to tell Bob thanks for all his volunteer work!  You’ll also see him in his merchandise-manager hat at the start of Saturday and Monday’s rides with the new Giordana clothing to distribute for those who preordered on-line.  Bob’s got a lot of hats.

Tid Bits…

Have you noticed more e-bikes on the road these days, including on our weekly club rides (where they are always welcome)?  They are expected to follow the rules of the road including special e-bike regulations which include bike lane speed limits and powering off on sidewalks, which hasn’t been a problem so far.  I’m thinking of adding two more e-bike rules for Saturday Cycling which also have not been problematic yet.

  1. The motor should be used to enhance the recreational cycling experience, and NOT as a competitive advantage in the fast pack.Just because someone can easily ride fast does not necessarily mean they belong in a high speed paceline. In general, no one should join a precision paceline without the consent of the group, for safety sake.
  2. No one with a motor assist is allowed to whine or complain about how tough the hills or headwinds are.You have to suffer if you want to sing the blues.

I hear that Wildflower in the Chandler Mall has finally reopened.  Although it’s not yet one of our Saturday breakfast stops, it has been popular on other weekly rides.

Have fun, ride safely, and stay healthy!

Ken
