Saturday Cycling Ride Report

Saturday Cycling Ride Report for 07/27/20

Hello Saturday Cyclists,

We had 27 sign in for the 2nd week in a row, but this week it resembled a bread line.  That’s because Tandem Captain Jim brought two cases of delicious bread loaves to share with anyone who had a way to carry them home.  I’ll be serving chicken salad sandwiches on healthy sprouted-grain oat bread for dinner tonight; thanks Jim!

Just so you know, about half the Saturday participants are wearing masks as we gather at the start, but only a few keep it on while they ride.  Many of us also carry one with us on the bike to put on before we enter the convenience stores at the rest stops.  I imagine the store workers appreciate it, given the number of people they interact with on the job.

The 4th of July falls on a Saturday this year.  We’ll just be doing a standard Saturday Cycling route, but feel free to dress up in your most patriotic kit for the specialness of the day.

Coming up...
Friday, July 3, 6:30 a.m., Independence Day (-1) Holiday Ride
This special Friday holiday ride led by Bob Litchfield will start at Dunkin Donuts at Warner & Lindsay (SE Corner) in Gilbert.  Both the 38- and 28-mile options are flat routes that loop through Queen Creek and include a 10 mile stretch of paved bike path.  The long route has another 3.5 miles of bike path and a second rest stop.  Maps will be provided at the sign-in.

Saturday, July 4, 6:30 a.m., Kiwanis Park. 8th Street Ail
The extended-distance option includes an out-and-back that goes as far west as the road will take us, plus several steep hills including northbound 8th Street from Chandler Blvd to Desert Foothills Parkway.

Saturday, July 11, 6:30 a.m., Kiwanis Park. Tour de Sue
Tour de Sue is a flat loop to the south, with route options of 25 or 35 miles. Both routes include a good long stretch with no traffic lights.

Saturday, 02/15/20 8:00 a.m., Kiwanis Park. Chandler-Pecos East
This will be the first time we’ve used this route in the past 3 years where it will not be leading us to a quarterly club meeting.
Distance options are 27, 33 and 41 miles. The extra-long route sails east on Chandler Blvd all the way from Rural to Power, returning by way of Pecos. The shorter routes simply head over to Pecos a little earlier.

Tid Bits…
Quarterly free breakfast meetings have long been a nice perk for PMBC members. This stinkin’ virus robbed us of our Q2 get together with President Kevin at the Hungry Monk and the outlook for the Q3 meeting is not so good.  An early September meeting has been penciled into my calendar, but we will have to wait and see if it gets erased or not.

Another major benefit of club membership is our insurance coverage.  If a club member or first-time guest should ever be injured while participating on a club ride, he or she will have the benefit of secondary accident insurance to help cover medical expenses.  However, club membership is never a requirement for participating in weekly rides.  Anyone who signs in at the start of the ride and follows our club rules is still intitled to the usual comradery and opportunity for friendship, including ride-leader assistance with flat tires and mechanical issues whenever possible. Then again, if you do not sign the waiver or don’t wear a helmet, I don’t know you.

Upcoming Events…
Have fun, ride safely, and stay healthy!
