Saturday Cycling Ride Report for 06/20/20

Hello Saturday Cyclists,

We were down to 27 cyclists on the summer solstice.  Don’t know if it had anything to do with the rise in COVID-19 cases or the heat, but those of us who did ride managed to enjoy ourselves.  With the new county-wide mask wearing requirements, Panera Bread was apparently not allowing anyone to come in and order food without a mask on.  I joined a small group at AZ Bread and I’m happy to report that they appear to be taking all the necessary precautions while still offering their full menu, and they were fully staffed with the usual fast, friendly service.

Due to a scheduling snafu we will be doing a virtually flat route to Power Road for the third week in a row (oops).  This time we take Guadalupe east and loop south to Ray.

Coming up...

Saturday, June 27, 6:30 a.m., Kiwanis Park. Marco Polo
The 26-mile standard route goes east on Guadalupe for 12 miles, then loops back on Elliot. The 41-mile long route keeps going east all the way to Ellsworth, then heads a little further south before rejoining the Elliot return path.

Friday, July 3, 6:30 a.m., TBD in Gilbert.  Independence Holiday Ride
The long route will be 40 miles looping through Queen Creek and includes a 10-mile and a 3.5-mile stretch on bike paths.  The short route will be 30 miles and includes the same 10-mile stretch on a bike path but not the 3.5-mile stretch.  Both routes are all flat.

Saturday, July 4, 6:30 a.m., Kiwanis Park. 8th Street Ail
The extended-distance option includes an out-and-back that goes as far west as the road will take us, plus several steep hills including northbound 8th Street from Chandler Blvd to Desert Foothills Parkway.

Saturday, July 11, 6:30 a.m., Kiwanis Park. Tour de Sue
Tour de Sue is a flat loop to the south, with route options of 25 or 35 miles. Both routes include a good long stretch with no traffic lights.

Tid Bits…
Board Member Bob has volunteered to lead an Independence Holiday ride on Friday the 3rd of July.   It will start and end at a TBD location in Gilbert.  More details will be provided next week.

I recently learned that Rick Heumann, longtime ally to east valley cyclists, is in the running to return to the Chandler City Council.  Here is his web site: www.rick4chandlercouncil.com

Upcoming Events…
Have fun, ride safely, and stay healthy!
